Old school movies

I need to know what some of your favorite old movies are. I seemed to take a liking to The French Connection and Taxi Driver a lot, so basicially 70's movies and some 80s. You guys reccomend anything? Or whats your favorite thats 20 years or older?

'On the water front' and 'Captains Courageous' are both excellent.

Any movie with Bruce Dern is going to be fun too. I highly recommend 'The Driver'.

I have Blue Thunder, The original Gone in 60 Seconds, Vanishing Point, Johnny Dangerously, Bullitt, Mad Max, Road Warrior, Thunderdome, White Lightning, The Driver among others. These are recent but worth seeing and having in your library: "Ronin" and "Reign of Fire".

Dang .... forgot "Zulu" too. Terrific movie. That's the one with Michael Caine where some 250 British soldiers held off about 5,000 Zulu warriors for several days. Based on a true story during the Boer Wars that resulted in the award of 12 Victoria Crosses for the action.

The BBC also had a 12 hour mini-series back in the mid to late 1980's called "Shaka Zulu" that was very, very good. It was a chronical of the life of Shaka. :up: As a series, I don't think it qualifies as a "movie". So, I'll give it honorable mention.

I stand corrected, the original did come out in 1973 and the second one came out in 1979, wasn't worth a second watch to me though. Vanishing point is great, I got that one too. It's mentioned in the sound track how American Graffiti got the idea of a DJ though the movie because of Vanishing Point.

The answer would depend upon the mood. If you ask me my today's ranking of "old" movies - more than 20 years old, I would list
- 2001 Space Odissey (still a mystery for me about its meaning)
- The Gipsy (french movie starring A Delon - you might like it if you liked "French Connection")
- Borsalino 1 (starring the same A Delon)
- The Sicilian Gang (again A Delon and again a french movie)
- Ben Hur
- Mad Max
- Godfather
- The shining
- The Day of the Jackal (the original one that you should watch- B Willis just played an excellent remake in "The Jackal")

But the list would probably be different if I should answer tomorrow...

Crisp dialog, eerie black/white photography, likeable (and unlikeable) characters, scary as hell for it's day.
