Wondering...
Do you think that Comcast/Time Warner et al. just "doesn't get it" anymore?
I moved (again) and this time, my complex's sole provider is Time Warner.
Me: I want a basic internet/basic cable service ONLY
TW: We have this package in which you'll only spend $80 per month
Me: I don't want to spend $80 per month
TW: For $80 per month, you'll get blah blah blah and xxx's and o's too
Me: I don't want to spend $80 per month
TW: For $80 a month...
Me: Cutting him off "I don't care if you're sending me someone to do my dishes, sweep the floors and drive me to work, I don't want to spend $80 per month
TW: We have this package, and for the low price of $8...

I don't think they care what we want. They have a virtual monopoly so they can do whatever they want to. I have basic cable and internet service at my "home away from home" and it's $37/mo. It is provided through the city. At my home, we have Charter. Best deal you can get is some bundled crap with a bunch of junk I don't want. They give you a good deal for about 6 months then they rape you. So I have basic cable and dial-up.

 They won't let you have a satelite dish?? Here in New York state as I understand it states that by law you have the right to have cable, satelite or of course rabbit ears. Then you hopefully could get DSL
Check out your place, there might be more to it:) .

Here's how the conversation with Dish Network would go:

Me: I want a basic internet/basic satelite service ONLY
DN: We have this package in which you'll only spend $80 per month
Me: I don't want to spend $80 per month
DN: For $80 per month, you'll get blah blah blah and xxx's and o's too
Me: I don't want to spend $80 per month
DN: For $80 a month...

I have Direct TV and love it, absolutely no problems with changing programming whenever I want to. Turned on HBO the day of the first Sopranos episode and will call back and turn it off after last show. No questions and no pressure to keep anything I do not want.

I own 4 sober living homes and I called Charter to inquire about the services. This was 3 years ago and was adamant about redundant channel blocks. My questions were answered and I was assured that NO ONE could get past the blocks and all was well for a while. Now, I have 6 boxes and the fastest internet connection to the tune of $150.00 a month.

Oct of last year, I open my bill and its about $500. Some jerkoff that was here got past the blocks and ordered a $20 a throw porno each night for a month.
I called and *****ed like there was no tomorrow. It took about 90 days but I was able to get all those charges dropped. Also they rebundled my services and now I pay $96 a month for every channel access the internet as well.

Charter's service blows. It takes forever to get to talk to someone and when you do they cant help you, they transfer you and so on. I doc'd all the time spent on the phone getting the issues resolved and it was just short of 32 total hours out of my life.

What gets me is the lack of choices regarding cable/internet.

Gimme more alternatives!

For my job, internet is a requirement. TV is just a nice to have. Also, my employer pays for my cell and I choose not to have a land line.
Guess that means I'm just too cheap :P
