For the record, a '96 MkVIII doesn't have a crash data recorder. It does have an airbag (SRS) module and it is black, but that's all it is, an airbag module. I wonder if the guy that told him it was unavailable, offered to buy the piece of junk for like $500 . . .:bandit: :bandit:
Luckily your car shares everything (Electronic and sheet-metal) with its cousins the GM and CV. They're still building them and selling 40,000 CVPI's a year. Some parts will go to obsolescence at some point - that's inevitable!
