My belt squeaks for 15 or 20 minutes until the car is really warm. I think it's getting worse. It stops but then under load it starts again. I've only had my 03 Silver B MM for a few months. It must just be slipping. Can I change it myself? any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Just go get a new belt and a half inch drive breaker bar to loosen and exercise the tensioner. You can change it yourself in about 4 minutes the diagram is there for you to follow for the placement of belt... If your tensioner is bad, there is, I believe a TSB from Ford on the unit....Most folks carry a spare belt in the trunk... the old belt is a good spare... RAM

I have the same problem you do except it comes and goes when it wants.
It mostly happens when it is cool and damp.

The first time I took it in for service was around 36,000 miles.
My Dealer replaced the belt and the tensioner.
Now at 72,000 miles it making noises again.
When it was last serviced, I told them about it and they looked at the belt.
They said it is not cracked or glazed and it wasn't making the noise
at the time so they can't really say what was causing it.
They asked me to bring it in if it happens while I'm driving so they can hear it.
It has happened while driving and it is gone by the time I get to the dealer.

I noticed that the belt was rubbing against the front cover and left
a black mark adjacent to where it goes around the tensioner pulley.
It is quiet most of the time, and the tensioner seems to be working fine.

I have to get it in soon, so I'll see what they say.

I've got a list of things for them to take care of.

half inch drive breaker bar I thought it was 3/8"

I just had that same problem, maybe, a month ago...the tensioner was my problem but I replaced the belt also when I did it. The goodyear Gatorback is good stuff and the repair is pretty easy cost me about $95 or so (I also bought some nice mechanix glove) for the parts and about 45 minutes to do the repair. The repair took so long because it was my first auto repair ever, and I did not know which pulley to wrap the belt around last (one of the two round edge smooth black ones...all of the others have a lip you have to go over) The instructions that come with the tensioner are pretty easy to follow if you have never done it before

When I bought my car from the dealership (used), it had an anoying belt squeal so I brought it back to the dealer the next week and they replaced the belt for free. 7000 miles later the belt squeal returned. I brought it in and it turned out my alternater through a bearing causing the pully to be off alignment and premature belt wear. They had to give me a new belt and alternator under warranty to fix the problem.

I picked up the 4060922 at AutoZone ($31), installed it and got rid of the squeak on cold start-up. I believe the 4060922 is the standard replacement.

The 4060966 would be 96.6" long--much longer than the stock 92.2". I have Steeda underdrive pulleys and verified with Steeda that the factory size belt is the way to go--4060922. My 02.

Love the Gatorback! Good luck!

Picked up the 4060922 today from Autozone.
Installed it in about 20 minutes.
While it was out I checked all my idlers.
It looks like I have the upper idler between the Alternator and the AC Compressor
wearing out bout you can only see it when the engine is running.
In the meantime there is no more squeak.

Does anyone know if the flat Idler pulleys
are the same as the pulley on the tensioner ?

I also ordered a replacement Dayco Belt Tensioner from Autozone online.
Gonna swap that new one in on Friday.

I trust you made the trip OK?? Hope so anyway!!

The Gatorback belt is #4061073....there is another number...6PK2725??

This belt was very tight to start with and I could not get it on the PS pullet like the Gates belts......so I took the PC idler off and threaded all the others then the PC idler...works great especially if you have someone to hold the tensioner!!

We made it all the way to KC. I'm going to Procharger today to pick up a new pully (under waranty) and a few other things (like a 3 pack of oil)

Glad you made it OK BJ!!!!

I know how things like this can put ya on EDGE!!!!:depress::depress:

Be sure to only put about 2/3 of a bottle of oil in the blower and "Sneak Up" on the full mark.....I had been over filling mine and had a small amount of leaking??:shake:

I think JD originally found that the re-fill is only about 4.5 ounces!!

Good Luck!!
