Recently I had been hearing a faint noise when braking unlike any other braking issue I've ever diagnosed, and I wondered if it might be a rear wheel/axle bearing. Sure enough, after driving a few thousand miles I just noticed a little drip on the inside on the LH tire. I have torn many Ford 9" rears apart but I don't have any experience with this 8.8. So my questions are:
1. Are there any tricky issues with the differential lock pin and C-clips?
2. In case the shaft is now galded, is there a Ford axle kit for this application (95 CV P71) as I hear about for the 300A Marauders?

Unfortunately, there is no axle kit for the 95 P71. After the cover comes off, you need to remove the pinion shaft and bolt. Use the box wrench for access the bolt. If your CVPI has ABS, then the sensors need to be removed to be able to push the shaft in to access the c-clips. If you have a small screwdriver, you could push the clips out. The high tensioned "S" spring (if equipped) does not need to be removed.

Thanks a bunch Roy. Currently the LH caliper and rotor are off, now for the cover. I sure hope the shaft is still OK. This unit is a trac-lok without ABS. I'll keep you posted.

There is a guy on ebay that has a very good DVD on how to overhaul the 8.8. His name is Kenneth Collins and the company name is BadShoe Productions. If you can't find him on Ebay I might be able to look up his email address.
