Jim, we put one of those ionization air cleaners in a car that smelled like that over a weekend.
Helped big time.
Change the 'cabin' filters, too.

Oxyclean in the carpet shampooer and a couple applications of Fabreeze worked wonders in my truck. That and plenty of fresh air and time.
+1 on the Fabreeze. Spray generously under the seats, on the carpets and floor mats. Then put an opened bag of bread in the closed-up car. Leave in there for 3 or 4 days, then repeat the Fabreeze and bread. The bread will help soak up any odors. You may have to do the process 2 or 3 times. Then, leave the windows down as often as possible for a while. This should take care of it.

that will take car of it, but if it's a car and has been heavily smoked in, the smoke smell will come back after the car has been closed up and in the sun

This is a SURE FIRE way to get rid of ANY odor in a car.
We used to do this in the Buick Dealer I worked for.
It would get rid of CIGAR SMELL inside a car and make it smell like new.
Go and buy about a dozen McIntoch Apples.
Cut them in quarters and distribute them inside the car.
Lock up the car and leave it over the weekend.
When you come back, most of the smell, if not all, will be gone.
If you can still smell it, do it once again, and the odor will be gone.
We have NEVER had to do it more than twice in ANY car.
Ozone is BAD for the inside of a car.
It will deteriorate anything that is rubber, plastic or vinyl.
The only GOOD thing it does is kill germs.
The germs that can cause odors.
Cigarete smoke odor is not caused by germs.

Panther's don't have cabin filters, at least that's what all the FLAPS stores told me.

We had an old Cadillac that smelled like a Cigar factory.
There was absolutely no hope for this car.
The Dealership owner walked around the block and came back with a bag of apples.
He quartered them, threw them all in the car, drove it up on the lift and locked it up for the weekend.
I asked him what was all the apples for ? He told me that I'd find out Monday morning.
That Monday, when I got in, I had to move the caddy off the lift.
When I opened it and got in, you could smell the leather again.
I never thoguht it would work, but he told me that it was an old remedy
that they have done for years and only the real old timers will tell you it works.

This is the #1 best solution.
I have one you can borrow, if you wish. A good one costs mucho dinero.
1st runner up. Ozium. The original. Spray carpets, headliner, etc. Turn on AC full blast on outside air (not recirc). Spray Ozium into plastic shroud by windshield wipers as this is the AC intake. Close up the car and put it in the sun for a few hours.

I don't understand why the car has to be locked over a weekend for the apples to work... Could it be left unlocked on a Tuesday and Wednesday?

Our cars dont have cabin filters :(

I don't understand how chopping up a bunch of computers and putting them inside your car is going to help things.....

Several large boxes of baking soda. Leave them opened up, or dump it out into bowls and let it set in the car for a couple days. Then throw it away. Cheap odor absorbent.
You will also need to thoroughly clean all interior surfaces in the car if you havent already done so. Cigarette smoke deposits crud on all surfaces in the car.

Thanks for the replies!
This is for my "new" Black MM, the ad said "nonsmoker", but my nose says otherwise.:(
I'll try the baking soda first.
I've cleaned all surfaces, Febrezed the carpet and headliner, but the smell is still there...
I'm kinda hesitant to try the apple thing.
Down here in FL, its 95 degrees in the shade most days, so I'm worried the apple smell will just replace the smoky smell.
Thanks for the offer Rich; i'll take you up on it if other methods fail.
Wes, thanks for your,um,input...:shake:

When I managed a night club, we would use coffee grinds to remove foul odors in the carpet. Put it right on the carpet and vacum the next day. Worked really well. ALOHA
It worked on BARF, should work on cigg. smoke ...LOL

I used leather conditioner for the seats. Then I sprinkled baking powder on the carpets and let it set for a day. After I vacuumed, the cigarette smell was gone.

Baking powder or baking soda? (Arm & Hammer is baking soda)

Don't forget to do the trunk as well. Maguiars Odor neutralizer works well for me in my detailing business. It may take more than one application to be truly effective.

ROFL
It was locked up so no one would touch it.
Over the weekends CUSTOMERS liked to peruse the garage
and if they saw car they wanted to see, someone got the keys
and opened it up.
We just locked up the car and hid the keys for the weekend.
The Apples won't replace the odor with Apple smell.
The Apples are Nature's deodorizer and they work really well.
It shocked me because I bet $20 that it would not do anything
but make the car smell like rotten apples. Sorry to say, I lost that bet.

Don't forget to freshen up the dash ductwork, you can either spray a Lysol type spray into the fresh air intake under passenger side wiper arm and cowl while the fan is on(climate control set to auto not max). Or under the dash right side behind glove box? spray the air intake making sure to set climate control to max first so door will open. You can go the extreme and remove the dash cluster trim and right side dash register(vent) and clean out ducts with cleaner of your choice.

This is better detail. Use the Ozium as is suggested above.
to get rid of the Ozium smell, get a couple pieces of CEDAR and throw under the seats.

idea. That makes sense. Best of luck.:)

If you have every tried "Pine cones" in a, small, well ventilated bag.
It is awsome!
I'm gonna try the apple trick and report back.
I got the test cars, of all test cars, for cigarette smoke smell.
In this SHO, I got.

Jim, I heard that certain dealerships have a chemical treatment they use in pre-owned cars that completely removes cigarette smell. You might want to look into it. Top detail shops may know of this as well.

Apples are the ticket. Listen to Pete. Just make sure you keep the car closed up the entire weekend. If smell persists repeat the following weekend.

Ok I tried everything mentioned above, except for the pine cones. The apples seemed to diminished the smell but it came back the next day after removal... to a lesser extent. So guess I'll give the apples another go.
