Since when is a 40mph British tank faster than a 70MPH Abrams M!?

I always loved Top Gear. Those guys are nuts. Hope they keep making it, not cancel it like they have been talking about.

When the video is made in the UK, on a British Military base?

The Brits have a superior attitude. They have peerage (and we don't). They have a much more sophisticated society, with an appreciation for refinement. Their Challenger probably handles better and is quieter, too (at 40 mph). Too bad Monty Python isn't doing their skits anymore. I'm sure it would have been a little more edgy than this one. ;)

Top speed of the M1 Abrams is governed at 45 MPH. Variants are now up to the M1A2 with the 120 mm smoothbore cannon. The original M1 vanilla had a 105 mm main gun. Ungoverned speeds of up to 70 MPH were achieved for the "Be All You Can Be" commercials in the '80s. I know the tank commander who did the video spots for the Army. He told me that the airborne jump for the ad was done 3 times --- but the suspension broke badly on the last jump.

The British Challenger is listed as "Maximum speed: 37 mph, 59 km/h (road) 25 mph, 40 km/h (cross country)"
