View Full Version : My Marauder has a stablemate on the way
I've wanted a GT 500 since they came out, but no way I'm going to pay $20K over MSRP. Plus, my wallet starts puckering at the thought of how much the monthly payment would be. Sooooo.... I found a dealer that does GT 500 "conversions". They take a stock Mustang GT 5-speed and add the entire exterior Shelby package: front end, vented hood, ducktail spoiler, wheels, tires, emblems, the whole shot. They say if you parked one of their cars next to a real GT 500, you couldn't tell the difference. Mine starts production on Monday and it takes a week or so to build it. With shipping time, I hope to have it by the end of the month. This is what it will look like:

Congrats, what color?? Roush has supercharger kits that are covered under warranty.
It's the same color as in the photo, Tungsten with silver stripes.

How much does such a conversion cost?

It would be much cooler if they took a stock V6 and put a GT500 powertrain in it .....
Hope you didnt pay too much...

These are all parts you can change yourself with ease. If you can change oil, you can do this.

I like it.
You can make other performance upgrades as you see fit

I heard there are so many unsold GT500's that you can get an interest free loan for one.

I don't get it...are they upgrading the engine so that it's got the supercharger and all the "go-parts"? If not, it seems to me that it's like a base Honda riding around with Type-R and NOS stickers when it really doesn't have any of that. Or like the guys that stick the SS emblems on their cars when in fact they're not SS's.
Correct me If I am wrong...I just don't get it??

do they also put the supercharged 5.4l in there?
It's strictly an appearance package. No drivetrain mods, unless I choose to do them myself. A real GT 500 has so much more weight on the front end that handling is compromised quite a bit. In fact, I talked to a GT 500 owner at a race course last spring, and he was very disappointed in the handling of his car on the course.
I can tailor my car how I want it, in terms of engine power, braking, and suspension. And still have a whole lot less invested than a real GT 500. I spent a week emailing dealers, and almost without exception, they want $20K over MSRP for a GT 500. I'm not going there.

While it might look nice, you'll spend most of your time explaining what it don't have rather than what it does.

Well, my comment did not have the intent t flame or to hurt your feelings, and I don't think you took it that way. But it looks like you're pretty stoked about your purchase - I hope you have fun with it.
There's a red w/white striped one at the local Ferd dealer. It has been sitting under a car cover for weeks. I wouldn't mind owning one but the last car show I entered had a GT-500 in my class and he didn't even get runner up. I'd be p.o.'d if I paid that kind of cash for one and a 4 door won first in class over it. To each their own, tho.
My local dealer has a red/white GT 500 on the floor also. The price is $75K. That's nuts.

Cool purchase Jon, good luck with it. I want pics asap when it arrives. My dealer in town has a GT 500 for sale, they're "only" charging $58,000 for it. Doesn't seem too bad to me, but something I would never buy for that much.

Jon, I just remembered. You had an '05 GT or was it an '06? And you sold that for the Charger, right? Or for the MM. Now you're getting a 'Stang again? I remember you saying you didn't like how it handled or something like that, and now you're getting another one? :dunno:

Fhelby.
Now make the GT underneith eat real Shelbys. Muwahahaha!
Well, the whole thing blew up. That dealer and I have been going back and forth for a week, and they continued to put obstacles in my path. First one thing, than another. I finally got fed up with it and told them to cancel my order. So I decided to take a different tack. I went to the local Ford dealer and bought a GT 5-speed witn only interior upgrade options, nothing else. Now I'll build it the way I want it.
Defyant, you have a point. The GT 500 is very nose heavy. A properly set up GT could beat it on a road course.
Raudermaster, I had an '06 Mustang. I sold it to buy the Charger, since the SO and I needed a road car and we were much more comfortable in the Charger. I'm setting this Mustang up to take thru the twisties and am not very concerned about road manners or long-distance comfort.

Shelby also has a CS series of cars (both v6 and v8) that are currently offer through "authorized" shelby builders but will be built in-house along side the GT500KR soon. These cars will weigh less and have the same to more power that the "regular" GT500. They have unique Shelby exterior and interior touches as well as the go-fast goodies that make them truely stand out. Just FYI.
My local Ford store has a GT500 (black/w White stripes)

My dealer sold the ones he got at 1K over sticker, and he doesn't have any hanging around to collect dust.
