I looked into a unit like this on my Chevy.

When you re-program your chip to be a 'Superchip', the unit downloads the factory settings and saves it.

If you ever need to change the chip back to factory settings, you plug it in and it resets the chip to factory.

I just bought the superchip programmer, have not plugged it in yet. It does work as DirectedBy indicates, it loads the factory program into the programmer, then loads settings into your computer, so you can go back if you wish. The settings are based on Y-N questions asked by the controller. It will let you modify for gears, top speed, shift points, etc... I guess I am a control freak, I trust my own settings. Using a programmer like this does set a bit that tells anyone that looks (with a FORD Test bench) that the programming was altered, as I imagine the chips do also...

The Superchips programmer does let you modify some of the settings. The items you change are summary items; you don't actually get to make the actual data table changes. You won't be able to properly correct the AF on a dyno or change MAF transfer function, etc. There are other programmers out there which do let you do these (EECTuner,Tweecer,etc). I strongly discourage using these, without true knowledge of the EECV. Most people who start messing with these tuners wind up destroying engines and trannys. The Superchips programmer won't let you make settings that will KILL your car. It also will not give you the same optimal performance settings that the pros can give you in a chip (i.e. Reinhart, Ford Chips, etc.)

The bang for the buck with Dennis Reinharts chip is not in the chip. You are paying for the programming, years of experience and peace of mind knowing that he takes such great pride in his craft and is only a phone call away if you have questions. His reputation and customer service are worth far more than what we pay him for that chip.

With the programmer alone......you are paying as much for that as the chip and still can't tune the car like he can. Just my .02 and hey those pennies add up........I am saving for his s/c kit.:D
