View Full Version : Rear end leaking

Hey:

I haven't posted for a while, but I wanted to hear if others have experienced a similar issue.

A year ago I had the right rear bearing seal replaced (on TSB @95k w/ ext. warranty coverage). I recently noticed a clunking sound on slow right turns and took her to the dealer (@118k miles). Turns out that the same seal is leaking again, just a lot worse.:(

The dealer claims that they have to take the rear end apart to determine the extend of the damage. How likely is it that this was a bad repair job (or bad bearing seal) that failed again?

Alos, based on some other posts, the TSB should have included new bearings, seals, and axles! They only replaced the right rear seal. Was this correct or did they try to save some money.

Anyway, I'll find out later in the week what they propose to do. Any suggestions on how to go about this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

if the axle is worn badly where the seal rides it will never seal properly..the axles should have been replaced at last repair

what you need is a axlesaver bearing. it is the bearing and seal in one and they ride at a different place on the axle than the stock bearing and seal no joke

Hello!

Just wanted to report the conclusion to this episode. $950 later everything is fixed (for now), and the she is riding great again.

The dealer claims that the previuos seal replacement did not have any affect, nor was any wear on the axle noticed during that time.

They replaced the right axle, bearing, seal and lubricants. The mechanic showed me the damaged axle and the area where the bearing rides. It was worn down 1/16" per side (total of 1/8" on the diameter). He said I was lucky that the axle didn't break on me.

Anyway, thanks for all the responses and assistance.

beware of repair shops not replacing correct wheel bearings, will have not have the same acceleration as stock wheel bearing and rear end will kick out bearing and seals!!!.

I'm sure the axle started to wear from before the first seal was replaced. They SHOULD have replace all items there were needed at that time to repair car properly, which would have been covered the first time. If the warranty claim is written properly it all would have been covered. You shouldn't have had to pay for something they overlooked or just didn't care the first time around.

I would put a complaint in with FORD. They could have repalced the needed parts the first time under the extended warranty. FORD warranty will not pay for a second failed seal in it's 12/12,000 mile warranty on installed parts as they feel it failed due to poor installation.
I speak from my many years of working in FORD/LINCOLN/MERCURY service depts as a service writer, and warranty claims processing.
