View Full Version : Cigar Tax

The U.S. Senate will shortly vote on a proposal to expand
the state children’s health insurance program by $35 billion.
Funding is to be provided solely through higher tobacco taxes.
The tax increases on cigars are particularly punitive,
as all large cigars would be subject to a tax of 53.13% of the
manufacturer’s selling price. This is an increase of 156.4%
over the current rate! And, while the current tax on cigars is
capped so no cigar pays more than $.05 in federal taxes,
the proposed legislation would increase the cap by 20,413%
(not a typo) to $10 per cigar! The combination of these two
factors will result in a dramatic increase in cigar prices in
the U.S. and many cigar companies are likely to go out of business.

We urge you to phone the offices of your own U.S. Senators
(see list below), give them your name and address and ask
that they vote to oppose the punitively high cigar tax increases
in the state children’s health insurance legislation.
Please call only your own U.S. Senators because Senators
respond to the concerns their constituents, not to those who
live in other states.

With more money flowing into the Treasury than ever before new taxes are needed.

Will it kill the luxury boat mfg and cost more to admin then it collects in revenue.

We need another Boston Tea Party!

I have heard that there will be a "Clinton Waiver" available on paying the cigar tax if you sign a statement that it will be used for other purposes. Don't think that Hillary is in favor of that amendment though. :D

I read that on a couple of the cigar boards I am on.

I doubt it will pass. Too many influential cigar smokers out there.

I also heard a number for cigars versus cigarettes manufactured every year. There is like 400billion cigarettes made every year versus like I want to say 3billion cigars but I may be way off. Long story short, there are tons more cigarettes than cigars made. Yet I do not think they are increasing the fees like this on cigarettes.....

Speaking of boats......

You better do a little research about the issue under consideration by the senate now regarding fees for any water expelled from your recreational water crafts (all boats, not just jet ski types) from the EPA.

The EPA is under mandate to start collecting fees for waste water from boats like bilge water, any water washed over decks, ballast water, etc... There has always been an exemption for personal boats. But something happened when revisions were made and that exemption is not longer present.

So you could end up paying $800 to $2000 from what I heard per year for your boat for these fees.

The fees were put there to help protect from foreign, invasive species being introduced into US waters by ships coming to the US. But no exemption was put in for recreational boats.

I found a link but didnt go there so you will have to verify the contents of this page.

That statement so completely misses the point it makes me ill.
Hey! Since the only purpose milk serves is to turn 50 pound calves into 2,000 pound cows, why don't we tax the snot out of it too?
Sorry, I Can Tell From Your InAbility To Correctly Capitalize A Sentence, That The Ideals Laid Down By Our Founding Fathers Is Beyond Your Capability To Comprehend :flamer:

Where have you been for the last 3-4 years on this sin tax craze. Next, they will be trying to figure out a way to tax SEX; but they haven't been able to devise a meter to regulate it.

Cigarettes are taxed by the Feds, States, and some cities and counties --- here's the breakout by State as of 1 January 2007 >>> http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/cigarett.html

I dont buy alcohol, I dont buy cigarettes, and I dont buy cigars through traditional methods.

Never really thought about it till I saw the threads recently!

What this is, is a "stealth" version of Thought Police.
"We" don't agree with the way you think, and as long as "We" can demonize "you", then we can gain popular support and punish "you" as we see fit.
It's not the same degree, but it's exactly the same train of thought that led to Jews being tossed into the ovens.
Give these Nazi's an inch, and they WILL take a mile.
