View Full Version : Not A Leaf....Paint Coming Off!!!!!

We had a bad storm Monday night and the Marauder was covered with leaves so I decided to rinse it off.

When I got to the front passenger door there was one that appeared to be stuck in the bump strip on the door so I got the hose closer and :argue::mad2:....IT WASN'T A LEAF....the damn paint blew off the bump strip!!

It appears it is blistered up a little about 2 feet starting about 6" from the front fender going backward and then it seems OK?? It came off to about the radius where the bump strip parallels the door (1/4' or so)!!:shake:

What kind of paint or primer is used to make sure this doesn't happen again??

I'll take photos and post later today.....

What next!!??:(

I would guess it got bumped and came loose from the rubber... sometimes they are damaged and only the clear coat gets hurt, sometimes is all comes off... Best is just to put on a complete new strip and have it painted by a body shop before hand...

How does the bump strip come off? Would it be re-usable? I'm asking because I have a full set of spare doors.

It comes off. It is on with double sided tape. Use the fishing line method to split the tape/door bond. If you peel it off, it will take on a curved shape that will never come out and always want to lift.

Clean the tape off the back of the strip with lacquer thinner. Clean the tape off the door itself with denatured alcohol. You WILL have to re-wax, but do not do so until the strip is back on. A Dobie pad and a terry shop towel will be helpful here.

Have your local shop paint the removed strip. Carefully re-apply 3M trim tape to the back of the strip. Use blue painter's tape to establish your line. Top or bottom, whichever is more comfortable to you. Warm the door with a hair dryer or direct sunlight. Study the other side of the car to learn the door gaps on either end. Then reapply the strip according to your line and gaps.

Boo-ya. You're done!

Why not mask it and sand it and paint it on the car.....Removing and replacing is a serious pain!!!:argue:

Cuz I see masking, sanding and painting on the car to be a pain!!!

To each their own.

Taking it off would provide the cleanest finish. Further, if you take it off, you could ship it to MillsMarauder or any other trusted painter.

Good luck either way.

I checked with a paint store and body shop here and both say Ford has done a poor job of preparing plastic parts for paint and that is why it is coming off!!:argue: They both recommended NOT removing the bump strip as the removal is quite involved and the residue is awful to remove...not to mention the reinstallation of a part painted off the car.

Mask the door....600 grit the area to be painted....clean with solvent and spray with a special flexible primer. Sand and re-prime as necessary until smooth enough for painting. Dust with just enough base coat to cover the bump strip and clear coat until enough is built up to buff.

Since my blower won't be back for another week I'm gonna give it a try??;)

If that were entirely true this would be a much more common problem, and paint would be flying off all our cars, especially the bumpers.

I personally don't really have too bad of problems with adhesive. But hey, I'm weird. :shake:

For a small job like that, Duplicolor makes some good stuff. Their 'special primer' is called 'Adhesive Promoter'. The rest is good instruction. Best if you can pick a brand and stick with it for chemical compatibility, meaning promoter, color and clear all the same brand. For little jobs like that I use Duplicolor and haven't had any issues yet.

The only other advice I'd offer is to not be too eager, but not let the prior coat completely dry. Too eager and the paint hangs and sags. Too dry and coats don't bond.

Place a fan on low sucking away the overspray. Wet the ground (or floor) with water before starting. It's an old trick to keep dust down. At that working height, a rolling stool will be a lifesaver.

You can do it.

I have painted two cars in the past and have painted the gas door on the Marauder and I do appreciate your advice!!:bows:

Duplicolor base and clear coat with SEM 39133 primer which is compatible according to the paint shop?? If it looks bad from the rattle can I'll have the paint mixed and airbrush it!!:D

We'll see how it looks....anything is better than now!!!:argue:

I was just thinking if it was easy enough to remove and replace the trim piece, why not put a good one on without having to bother with the whole paint process.

Brian......

I'll call today and see how the new one comes.....primed or painted?? If painted I would opt for the R&R...if not a touch-up will do!!

Removing the rear badge was a PITA so I can only imagine how much fun this piece would be to remove!!:argue:

My parts gal in Walterboro, SC said she thought "Primed" only??

Stay Tuned!!:D

I have purchased for Marauder and CV. Both came unpainted. Plain white.

Well.....My parts guy sealed the deal as far as painting it on the car!!

A new bump strip is over $100.00 from Ford and he will let me have it for $70.00 but it is unpainted!!:mad2:

I'll work on it some this weekend and see what happens??

Was there any paint work done in that area? That would be my guess.

I don't think so but not sure....could have been a bad touch-up at the factory??

I was thinking that using strong cleaners to remove bugs from the mirror but the paint guys say no....just poor prep from Ford's vendors??:argue:

I'm going to sand it today and see how it looks...after priming and finish sanding I'll dust it with SB spray and CC......anything will look better than now!!:mad2:

Initial sanding was fairly easy and what's interesting is the loosening of the paint only goes about 1/4" or so from the edge (see photo)??

I'll prime it tomorrow and sand it again before painting!!
