Well, I just picked up an Aviator and I've been reading around and searching online. I guess there's not much of a following of the Aviator due to the demographic market and small production run. But I've been reading and I guess we share the same engine. Not sure about the other stuff, but I'd like to know how I can unleash a few more ponies?

I've looked into going Supercharged - which is an option. But what are the first things that I should do to increase the HP? I know the usuals like Exhaust and CAI - but any advice on makes/models of these items would help. Also, any other insight you can provide would be great. Thanks in advance.

Drew

We have an Aviator, and yes, it has the 4.6L Cobra DOHC motor. However, the intake is opposite ours, similar to the Mustang configuration.

An All-wheel-drive dyno can be difficult to find for a really accurate tune, but both of our vendors here have tunes available. Reinhart did ours with an xcal. Jessica really only wanted firmer shift points, which is easy to do. Air fuel to gain more HP will require a dyno to tune correctly.

There are blowers out there indeed, as are the basic bolt-ons. She put a resonator delete tip on recently and it sounds very much like a MM.

As far as websites...nada. There is one I belong to, but there is little interest in the Vator.

Nice ride! We have similar tastes in vehicles and rims.

Interesting on the setup. Mine is 2wd as we live in Texas and no need for AWD. Would you recommend a blower? How do these trannies hold up? I may just look into getting a CAI and Exhaust for now. I just looked under the hood and I'm wondering where you would fit the blower? It seems as if it would be a tight fit. What year Cobra Motor are these like? Sorry for all the questions - thanks.

It's a shame they didn't keep making these things - they are really nice to drive. I HATE the MKX they have out now....

.....I'm wondering where you would fit the blower?

A kool-aid mixer fits from what I understand.

Since yours is 2wd, find a dyno with an SCT tuner and get'r done. Should squeeze quite a bit of hidden power out of it.

LOL Zack. Yea, we've been looking into getting a tune for my Mom's 04 Explorer 4.6 since the shifting in that is terrible.

These are one of the all time greats ...that slipped by with hardly a notice. We had an '03 Mineral grey, and now an '05 Dark Charcoal. Best vehicles we've ever owned, period!

By the time they get ~ 20K on the clock they'll be getting 20MPG on the highway with 4WD, dunno about the 2WD ones. :D

We got nearly 15 mpg pulling the Marauder and a 1500lb trailer at 80mph.:P

Do they put the 4.6L dohc in the new explorers like the aviators?

It is amazing how this one slipped right past me. I heard it was exploder based and just ignored it.

I wonder if I would have bought my Marauder if I new more about it.

Maybe I have found my second car.

The Aviator also has a Dual runner intake manifold to increase low-end torque, and maintain high-rpm power as well. Some of the 99-01 Cobra owners have switched to that intake as a poor man's FR500 intake. The drawback is it needs a HUGE cowl hood to stuff it under.

Western Motorsports in Calgary use an Aviator motor in their race car, they just cut out the long runners and use the short runner butterflys as throttle blades.

Yes, the Aviator is the exact same motor as the Mach1 and Marauder, with a IMRC intake manifold and single blade throttle body. Definitely tuned for more torque.

As for the Explorer, the 4.6L 3V is the current engine, 292hp, runs as strong as the 4V in the Aviator, IMHO, but with more room to work under the hood (I care because it's what I do every day at my local FLM dealer :)) Older Explorers with the 2V motor have supercharger options, haven't seen any for the 4V Aviator or the 3V Explorer, but they may be out there. The same company that made my blower makes a kit for the 2V Explorer.
