Had the 86T and 89T and they were the best. It was a far better road and track car than any of the 911 T's I had..tho not as much fun(you cannot scare yourself without being totally stupid). You will not find a car any more rewarding to drive if you really really like to drive and enjoy vehicle dynamics. Maintenence is not cheap and parts are very expensive. There are a million mods available...not inconsequential in our community:D Dennis

Well, I have never driven either. I think the Talon's can be a good car and made to go quite well, but they have parts breakage issues, too.

For me, it would have to be the 944. Then again, I am a "closet" Porsche fanatic and will own at least 1, if not more, some day. 944, 928, 911.

Like was said, the Porsche is going to be more expensive to maintain and own. And you have to do the T-Belt quite frequently.

My neighbor used to have 2 Porche 944's the 80's ones. He sold the maroonish one to his son and got a gold one which he took me for a ride in. Was a beautiful car, Stickshift black interior and was mint.

I just remembered he woulda saved it and sold it to me for 10g's

Crap!

I owned a '91 Mitsu Eclipse GSX (AWD turbo automatic) and it was one fun little car in inclement weather but pretty much a turd on dry roads. Just too heavy for the 200 +/- whatever hp 4-banger without a clutch to drop. I think it was like around 4000 lbs. Never new enough back then to mod it though. Put 100k on it and traded it in for peanuts because everything was about ready to go on it and the paint already had. I don't know if the '96 is the same generation or not. I'd go for the Porsche though because it just might hold a resale value.

I'd say go for the porsche I've driven a eagle talon and worked on one in my shop class and it was a lot of fun and i really enjoyed messing with it but the porsche is just a better car

Had a 944, go for it. Just make sure it has had the timing belt changed on schedule. Rebuild for that motor is serious $$.
They are a blast to drive and carve corners with.

Stay as far away from the 944 as u can get.

Terrible quality and parts cost more than gold.

Never had problems with mine (had all records since new), and with smart shopping you can find parts at non dealer prices.

Well I found two cars that appeal to me.

Used

1989 944 Porsche with about 57,000 miles

or

1996 Eagle Talon TSI AWD with around 71,000 miles

Anyone have or ever drive either of these?

Any thoughts?

Depends, is it a play toy or a daily driver you need to be able to depend on every day? If it is a toy, go Porsche and play...as a DD the Ricer will be easier and less expensive to maintain. Good luck. Dennis

I'd pick the Talon. My TSI AWD handled far better than my 86 SVO or 93 Cobra and it actually handled the snow and ice better at the time than my wife's Blazer 4WD.

I had a 92 Talon TSI.

Less than $2000, it ran 12.1 ;)

A '96 would have a better trans, head and block. Is it and auto, or manual? How much? Where is it located?

I had an 90 Talon Tsi AWD 5 speed. Nothing like side steppin the clutch at 6 grand. All 4 wheels hook and your gone. Used this method to smoke a 5.0

Agreed. You have to remember what you're starting with...a car whose original cost in 2006 dollars was probably close to $50K versus a car whose current version sells for ~25K loaded. Design, build, vehicle dynamics, and repair/parts costs follow accordingly.

Just remember 2 things if you buy the Porsh. If your young the auto insurance will kill you and don't ever leave home without your credit cards and check book. Like was said earlier. If anything breaks down it will cost on a rule 3 times as much. And that's no joke.

The 1st gen DSM cars were pretty good. A buddy of mine had a built '92 GSX Eclipse with an Evo block that was built, and 20g turbo, built tranny/diffs and that thing would dust a lot of cars on the road even from a roll. Until he blew his timing belt and the engine went caflooey.

I had a 92 eclipse awd turbo. It drove like it was on rails and with a few mods it shocked alot of people. I had no problems with it untill I blew a heater hose and seised the motor (my fault) but that was at 150k+.

Also looking at the new Smart cars but they are just tiny small, on the other hand they are alot safer than a motorcycle.

Cost wise something that will cost about the same as 3 bus tickets a day + 2 hour waiting time about $30/hr. Parking is usually a perk, although with a pass can be $10-20 a day. ~ $63 a day minus $20 (maybe) = $43 a day (*) ~ 22 days = ~ $946 a month.

Driving to work may not be fun in rush hour but standing on a bus for an hour and a half is never fun. I live 57 stops from the down town city core.

WOW,So long as you can swim and hit a target you should consider moving to New Orleans.;)

Does this all mean that the Talon is more likely to blow it's engine or that the 944 is going to break down and require hours in the shop?

or both?

Any german car besides VW is expensive (more than japan or US) to maintain, but my neighbor never had any problems with his 944's and they were nice cars.

Get the porsche, in the end its a porsche vs a eagle. German vs japan. Wait werent they on the same WW2 team?

I think if you left both cars stock (or relatively so), and you were to find a well cared for examples of either, and you did the required regular maintenance that either one would run for a long time. I know of a number of 200,000+ mile original motor 944's out there.

I think both would be reliable and fun to drive. For me, I would rather have the 944 than the Talon. I like German enginering in cars and have always liked Porsches. That is just my decision.

One thing to think about if you get the Porsche, check around and make sure you have a Porsche certified mechanic that can work on the car for you. I wouldn't want just any shop to maintain my Porsche. And ask him how much a T-belt and water pump is for parts and labor as that will the biggest item of regular maintenance on that car. Potentially a clutch, but depending on miles on the car it may have already been done.

Check out this site for not only cars for sale, but excellent forums for all kinds of Porsches:

I missed a chance to buy an 87 944 5 speed for $5k with 118k miles 7 years ago and I'm still kicking my self in the arse for not buying it. Red with black leather and recent service. The only bad part was the A/C lines were bad and it leaked R12 quickly.
