View Full Version : Noise-Trans?

For about a month now I have been hearing a whining noise when I accelerate in any fashion (hard/soft). It is extremely consistent and can be heard even when driving like an old lady. It goes away when I reach my desired speed (no load). I'm a car guy but even still it's hard to tell if its from the engine/supercharger/or trans. I removed the supercharger last week and changed out the oil and replaced 2 idler pulleys and put on a new belt. I am fairly certain the supercharger is not the problem. Just in the last day or two I feel the trans 1-2 shift a little funky. I am starting to think transmission. Has anyone had a trans failure proceeded by a whining noise????

Do you notice your noise being in any gear or just certain gear. If the noise is not there in 3rd gear only, then may be your planet gears have some chip in them or missing teeth since the planets doesn't spin in 3rd gear.
I had an AOD trans in a different car before that was whining especially in 1st and 2nd gear and also funky shift behavior. When the tranny shop did a tear down, they showed me the cause of the whine. Two of the planet gears were missing a couple of teeth.
Hopefully yours will not fall into the same pattern.
BTW, care to elaborate on that 1-2 funky shift?

If you changed the pulleys it could be from them. I changed out my tensioner and it has been making a s/c whine sound for 1-2 months now when I give it gas or get up to about 40+ mph. Just wish it also included the power with the sound lol.

I know for sure it makes the noise in 1 and 2, but will check today for 3rd as well.
As far as pulleys go, it made the noise before I did the SC maintenance so I don't think that is it.
Not really sure of anything yet but it may be one of those things where it will have to get worse to diagnose. :-(

Mine started whining like power steering when its cold. (and it was cold at the time). come to find out my trans filter fell out of the bottom of the trans into my TCI deep pan. cost me quite abit.
