can our coolant temperature get before we have a MELTDOWN???
Today I was going through Mt. Holly, NC and the outside temp was 104* as I watched my coolant temp rise on the ScanGauge....211*......215*... ..218*.....222*.....226*.....2 28*......that's when I turned off the A/C and rolled the window down and watched (BTW the OEM temp gauge was at about 20 MPH...up from the normal 18 MPH)!!:argue:
The coolant temperature fell quickly from 228* to 209* with the A/C off so I turned the A/C back on as I was leaving town and the temperature held at 209* to about 216* with the normal 18 MPH on the OEM!!
I probably would not have noticed if I had not had the ScanGauge but what is the highest safe temperature we can run before something goes POOF??:cool4:
BTW....the engine was running and sounding fine but I didn't want to push it at 228*!!!:shake:

Are you running a 180 stat. I don't have a power adder, but the highest my ScanGuage I has read is 200 with outside temp reading 108-110.
Usually hangs around 191 in city with a run up to 197 getting on highway both with A/C on. After a mile or so it drops back to 190 -193.
Have you opened your cooling system recently? Also is your fan coming on?

check the fan and I would replace the thermostat..it a $10-15 part, no big deal when you consider the bigger damage cost. probably won't be bad idea to flush and fill the coolent too.

Yepperz....
I have a 180* t-stat and just a month ago installed an EMP-Stewart high flow water pump but my OEM was running about the same temps??
My IAT was running around 125* but I was never in boost?? Maybe the blower heats the air anyway and of course the IC is in front of the radiator so that would add to it as well...I guess??
The pressure rating on out cooling system is 16 PSI and I wonder what temps will exceed this and cause something to blow??:shake:
I chickened out at 228*!!!

I Would have too... don't know 'bout that one.

If it gets really bad roll the windows down and put the heater on full. Same thing if you lose your rad fluid.

Do you have a list of your mods?
Do you have a trans cooler?

Was those temps after the s/c was installed or before? Depending where IC is located may have to lower it. Read somewhere that around 250 is the danger zone.

228 is pretty warm, but as long as your cap doesn't blow, I'm pretty sure you can push 230-240. Understand, the cooling system is still extracting heat, and keeping the motor temperature from running away.
It's under a lot of stress with a ITC, 104 temps, hills, A/C, etc.

BTW, I started using 60/40 water/coolant, with redline water wetter, and my temperature is now 20 mph, used to be 21. Under big load, like what you are doing, I bet the difference would be even better. - fc

sounds like a rear cooling kit is needed..... here in atlanta its been getting up to about 106 and my coolent temp has only got up to 200....no lie so with temps like that that kit is worth the money

Do you have your S/C installed yet? Just wondering how it changes things with those 106 deg days.

I changed the thermostat, coolant and water pump at the same time a month or so ago. The IAT sensor is right before the throttle body and usually runs around 105* to 125* when air temps are around 100*.
I have the OEM trans cooler and yesterday the A/C was set on 76* running in "Max" mode for half an hour before I noticed the coolant temp??
I will repeat.......if the ScanGauge was not there I probably would not have known a thing as the range on the OEM temp gauge (from 18 MPH to 21 MPH) is actually about 50* (180*-230*)!!
I will open the cross over to see if it is full but I did "Burp" it several times when I replaced the T-stat and coolant!!
Another thing is my service guy at the dealership replaced my 134a a week or so ago and the A/C works much better.....meaning the condenser may be a bit hotter than in the past?? BTW.....It was 1 OUNCE low on Freon and the compressor was cycling too much.....got it back up to 38 ounces and it is MUCHO FRIO!!!!:bows:
I do wonder if the blower may still add heat to IAT when in bypass (running with manifold vacuum.....no boost)?? If so the extra heat from the inter-cooler may be the killer with the A/C on "Max"!! :mad2:

I think what was said above about the IC blocking air flow is true. The cooling sys is not always going to maintain 180*, as above there will be conditions that drives it up.
The questions at what temp do we need to take action 260*, 250*?
IF it's over 100* and I am going 15-25 mph for over 10 minutes my temp/ FP can climb. I shut the A/C off and they both go right back down.
% if it's 90-95* I can't force it to happen, which leads me to believe its the A/C throwing heat on the radiator.

The pressure rating on out cooling system is 16 PSI and I wonder what temps will exceed this and cause something to blow??Every pound of pressure will raise the BP of water by 3°, so with a 16 lb cap, you should be good for 260° before the car "overheats"...

My service manager told me that we are safe up to about 245*-250* coolant temperature with aluminum motors......Iron can go higher (275*??)??
I'm convinced the blower creates heat even when not in boost......my IAT runs about 20* over ambient which means at 100* ambient I actually have 120* air coming off my IC and onto the radiator ??
