I've read a few times here about people installing a "working oil pressure gauge". Is there somrthing wrong with the stock one?

Yes, it's either on or off. It doesn't measure actual pressure. Have you noticed that it reads Zero when the car's turned off and around 60 when it's running?

Here are directions to replace the gauge.

I just replaced my gauge's yesterday. The true reading of the oil gauge is when the engine is cold it will show 75-80 psi at idle. When you give it a rev or start driving it will go up to almost 100psi. When the engine warms up it will stay around 50 psi when cruising, up to 75 psi when getting up to speed and around 25 psi at idle.
The factory gauge will show 60 psi at all times due to the 6 psi pressure switch. It was Fords way of preventing people coming back to the dealer wondering why the oil pressure was so high and then dropping when the engine warmed up.
BTW, If you just replace the sender and keep the stock gauge, the needle will move very slowly and stay within the 60psi range. I tried it after installing the new sender just to see.

^^^what they said^^^

The OEM gauge is not actually a "gauge" at all, it's a glorified idiot light.

AutoMeter sells a real working replacement gauge kit that matches the stock look almost exactly in daylight, and has a back-lit nighttime look that is similar to the OEM. The p/n is 4927 and the matching voltmeter is 4992.

Note: as Blackened300a said ^^^, you have to replace the sender and the gauge unit. Both are included in the kit.

My old 86 pick up truck has a factory working oil gauge. I can see Fords reasoning though. People wont read the manual. The service advisor wont read the memo, and half who buy new ( not on this list ) wont know how a real oil gauge works.

I installed a Phantom II Mechanical oil pressure gauge (and matching volts gauge.)

My sender will never fail....

I think you have been speaking about this for months. Sounds like a cool install (did you ever get the SS lines?) but where are the pics?

Haven't had time to delete all the pics of the Jag I sold.

Found a place just down the street from me that hooked me up with a teflon liines SS braided line I put the connectors on AFTER running it through the firewall, which is just what I wanted.

Everything is perfect! Neddle moves freely and veries with RPM. No leaks, no drips, runs or errors....

I'll try to get pics up...

I had thought that the voltmeter was a full sweep gauge. At idle, the voltage would drop to about 10.5-11V. I was very concerned when I first bought the car as I also noticed that the rear defrost took about three times as long to defrost as the one on my old Tempo did. Also, at idle the lights (inside and out) would dim in an extreme fashion. All of this lead me to believe that I had voltage issues. For this reason I took the car back under warranty.
No problems were discovered, but they replaced the gauge (doctor, my wife is sick and she keeps complaining. Can we remove her tongue?). Sensible, eh?
My question is this - since the gauge mimicked what I was seeing in reality, I assumed this was a functioning gauge. Is this not the case?

Some have found the gauge to not be as accurate as they would like, but it is in fact functional.

Those who say it's a fake may just be assuming that because of the oil pressure gauge. Many of us who have replaced the voltmeter only did so to maintain a cosmetic match with the replacement oil pressure gauge.

For those who want a mechanical oil pressure gauge, Auto Meter sells 6' of -4AN line with the correct fittings for around $52.00. This line will not leak in the interior or the car like nylon can.
