I need back tires soon, stock BF Goodrich 245/55/18s. Tirerack.com said back ordered about 8 weeks. Someone told me use 50s instead of 55s, but Tirerack.com said it would screw up the traction control. Some of you said go 255/55/18s. No problem with the traction control with that? What would anyone recommend if I don't get the OEM back tires? Thanks in advance for any info.

I've had 255/55's on the rear for a couple of months now. All is well with the traction control.

What brand/style 255/55's are you running?

Also running 255/55 Bfgoodrich. no problem with traction control or ABS. Had tune adjusted for tires for speedometer.

I went lower profile on both front and back. 235/45/18 in front and 245/50/18 in the rear I have been running this set up for over a year with not a single issue.

I, too, am tired of the inability to get rear tires right now. I just passed 40K miles on the original rears and I've done well with them. They are not gone yet but will be gone in less than 6 months. If I could get the stock tires, I probably would. But, what about the 255/55s? According to the Discount Tire calculator the differences are:
0.43 inch larger diameter,
1.36 inch larger circumference,
10.77 less revs per mile,
1 mph error in speedo at 65mph (actually 66).

Recently, comparing my new OBD II scan gauge to my speedo, my speedo shows 1 mph high, so these tires would actually put the speedo closer to accurate, right?

So, do these size back tires cause any problems with TC or ABS? I really don't want to deal with that.

Thanks.

Jon

Ditto plus the added traction of the KDW-2 and the tire well filling up is nice.

I spent a bunch more time searching the archives and can't seem to find a reason not to use 255/55 on the rear. I think I'll go with that.

What is your speedometer error running smaller tires all around?

There are no traction control or ABS issues with running 255/55/18 on the back and stock size on the front. I have been running KDW2s in this configuration for about two years now.

The car looks silly with all four smalls. Even sillier with all four large.

I realize this doesn't help with your dilemna, but I had to offer before you went and did it...looked...and :puke:

There are other options for rears that are very close to standard size, and retain the natural rake the car was designed to have.

I'm sorry, CRUZTAKER, what's your point. I'm looking to get the 255/55s for the rear and leave standard size on the front. I'm not changing the look just lifting the rear less than .25 inches??? Did you read me wrong?

I'm looking to get the 255/55s for the rear ...

Sorry man, aparently I did misinterpret.
My apologies.

There have just been SO many threads lately about the SAME issue of lack of rear tires, that I have skimmed through most. I normally would reply as I have several times recently:

"255/55/18 Nitto 420S work well for me."

For some reason, I thought you were actually suggesting using 4 of the same size all around. Don't get me wrong...people do it. And continue to do it as bad as it appears.

Not the case here. So disregard. If you had not quoted me, I would have deleted/edited. ;)

No problem - just wanted to make sure I was alright. I agree (in my opinion) that the rake is the best look and will stay with that. Thanks!

I ordered new tires from tirerack.com today. Kuhmo ECSTA SPT. 235/45 for the front and 245/50 in the rear. The front will be .925" lower and .964 in the rear. I hope this will keep the ABS and TC happy. Not sure how much the speedometer will be off. I'll worry about the speedo later. The dealer found me a set of OEM BFG's. $876. I can't spend that kind of money every 10 months. The Kuhmo's were $557 with shipping. I'll have them in a day since they are coming from Florida. I'll let you know how the work out next week.

Right now I'm torn between the Toyo Proxes S/T and the Goodyear Eagle ResponseEdge for the back. I was ready to order the Toyos but then Tire Rack has a great deal right now on the Goodyears. I probably will order the Goodyears this week if I get off my duff and do it!

This sounds good since the BFG stock rears of 245/55/18 are so rare.
Just tell me 2 things all you MM gurus:

Does the 255/55/18 in the rear fix the center wear problem we have all been experiencing?

And if it does, what PSI is optimal to prevent it?
Thanks

I just ordered two new Goodyear ResponsEdge tires for the rear this afternoon. They say I should have them tomorrow.

UPDATE: Just talked to Tire Rack about my order this morning (10/23/07). They said they just got word today that BFG rears should be shipping to them again within 3 weeks. I decided to amend my order and go with the OEM rears. Arrived on my doorstep on 10/31 - had to get them in the garage before the trick-or-treaters started coming! Now, they are stinking up my garage since the rubber is, apparently, quite fresh. Don't know when I'll get them on yet.

I got the Nitto 420s 255/55-18 in the rear with the stock in the front. No problems, and I have a traction control equipped model.

It's long been "common knowledge", or at least common tire dealer advice, to ALWAYS put the same brand/style/model tire on all 4 wheels, and performance cars may vary from that only in running larger rears (but still same brand/style/model).

Is this advice really true or useful?

Are any of the posters here experiencing ANY performance or handling (especially emergency or extreme handling) degradation WHATSOEVER by mixing brands; like running OEM BFG's up front and some other brand/style/model 255/55x18's on the rear?

Adhering to the "same brand/style/model" rule obviously limits choices, since many of the alternative rear tire 255's mentioned in this thread are not available in the OEM front tire size.

Consider....Yokohama ADVAN-ST, matched set, OE size front, 255/55/18 rear, UTOG rating 320/AA/A, hi-perf suv tire for Acura, BMW, Benz, Porsche, Range Rover..should get superior wear over the bfg

My center wear issues were caused by my right foot...

I am also running the 255-50-18 KDW2's I got from wes (they were new for MVV)... and I am trying to keep the burn-outs to a minimum since they are no longer made...

I was on Tirerack.com a short while ago (this morning) looking up their price for stock fronts (I'm getting to be in dire need of at least one new front). I found that they now have the 245/55 stock fronts back in stock.
