In Calgary? I'd say a truck or SUV no? You could get cheap late 90's to 2002 Explorer for around 5 grand....but between the two I'd go with the Talon for the AWD.

Ive had a AWD Talon. I loved that car. dont let the ground clearance fool you, it will go through the snow like nobobys business. AWD is awesome for winter. Not to mention there is plenty to mod on that car too if you want, so you can have a fast winter beater.

I live in the Laurentians, in QC. Snow and ice guaranteed for at least four months per year. Twisty narrow bad roads, hills... and ice storms. Tempeature down to - 35 celsius, quite often.

As a daly driver - about 200 km driven each day - I use a 2003 LSE MGM with studded tires for the winter. The car behaves fantastically, and from the crisped face of their drivers, I would never exchange that car against any SUV.

The only time I was stuck happened in March of this year. It occurred in my yard , but the snowmover was stuck too. It took a bulldozer to move him.
