View Full Version : More Airflow for K&N CAI kit

I found an air filter which should have a little more airflow, maybe it'll help somebody??

The original K&N filter is on the left, the other one is from a Steeda CAI kit for a GT500. I haven't seen any other aftermarket filter with the inverted cone at the end which has the correct dimensions and flange size to fit the K&N CAI kit.
The new version pre-filter (Sock) is open on the end. I still have my old one, not sure if it is still available in this design, but there are copy-cat manufacturers out there now so maybe one of them will have the closed-end version.

Got a part number for the Steeda filter?
281STE100 is what is listed on my receipt, but I can't say if that's a Steeda part # or if it's a stock # that the shop I got it from assigned to the part.

My Air filter looks just like the Steeda. (it came with the car when I bought it) Do you have to coat the Steeda filter with oil like you do the K&N filter?

Thanks! I just installed a K&N CAI this past Sunday. This may be the ticket for a little more flow.:D

I searched Steeda's website, but couldn't find where you could buy the filter without the kit. Any clues?
Thanks

Probably have to call them. The shop where I got it just happened to have it sitting on the counter.

Called Steeda's sales line 954.960.0774. Part number is 281STE100 and it was $66.75 shipped. They were kind of puzzled with the whole "going to use it on a Marauder with a K&N FIPK". :P

So it does fit? Any other colors besides blue?

I assume it fits since FordNut has one. I didn't ask about different colors.

Based on your thread I also called Steeda to order this and got some confusion... after a bit of checking things the sales person advised me that the part number for the air filter alone is 281STE100
Hope this helps out...

Brian, did your new Steeda cone filter come pre-oiled?
FordNut

I didn't touch it to see if it was oiled. Just popped it on and tightened the hose clamp.
281STE100 agrees with what was on my receipt, so that is confirmed to be the Steeda part # now.
It fits perfectly. I've seen a couple of them and they were both blue.
That price is probably MSRP, you may get it cheaper at a dealer (I did).
If you look at the Amsoil website, they have pics of similar filters. I ordered one and it did not have the inverted cone at the end as shown in the pics, so I sent it back. I've checked w/UPR who had the other size that fit my power pipe with the supercharger but they don't have one to fit the K&N FIPK. So far the Steeda is all I've found.

Interesting Brian. Is it a 4 X 6 " ?

Oops! Its a wonder I made it through school with my note taking skills. :P I will edit my post to avoid confusion.

I ordered one and should receive and be able to pop it on by Monday - Steeda sells their own recharge kit, but I imagine we can use our K&N kits without issue.

Received it last week & installed it (fits perfectly, and definately increased the air-flow surface area by quite a bit - guesstimating at least 25%). Nice blue color - Blues would like it.
I think K&N and Steeda OEM the elements from the same manufacturer, as the units are identical except for the inverted cone and ring-cap on the end. Lastly, know that this element reduces the air-sucking noise quite a bit probably due to the increased surface area....

If that is the case, could you just cut the existing KN filter cap?? I have never seen the inside of the filter.

Technically you could, but in addition to appearance related labor you would still need to produce a mini-cone element and mount and seal it internally in such a way as to not allow any unfiltered airflow as well as it not getting sucked off and blocking the intake - obvious stuff, but my point is the labor involved makes it worth purchasing rather than building/modifying on your own (if that is where you were going with that).

Gotcha! Like I said I was not sure of the internals of the KN, if it is simply hollw you are 100% right, not worth it.

I wouldn't frackin' know, they haven't returned my call I left on their stinking machine. So much for customer service. Too bad one of our vendors doesn't carry Steeda.........or do they ????????? Hello....Hello......Hello..... .

From what I've heard, they are actually made for Steeda by S & B, so you may try contactinig them. Sorry, I don't have their contact info.

Anyone have the S&B part number for the #281STE100 Steeda filter. I cannot find it on the S&B web site.
Thanks,
Glenn

The JLT filter (S&B) has that little mini cone as well. I don't mean to sound like the nay-sayer, but I really doubt that little opening produces more HP. Someone should do a dyno before and after.

did you notice a difrence(increase) in induction noise?

Yup, the air-sucking sound is much less pronounced, especially on startup; this is probably because of less resistance due to the increased surface area of the element.

WUPs - not an increase, a DECREASE in induction sound....

I'm sure any increase in actual power is minimal, but the increased surface area can't hurt; certainly there will be a longer interval of adequate air-flow as the element collects dust/debris... the increase to the elements total surface area is in the 20 - 25% range. (may make up for the loss of using a prefilter/sock that someone else mentioned).

281-STE100 Steeda Filter is actually more than just the filter.

You should call them - the 76 bucks is for the filter element only (not the heat shield as shown in the picture. The description is as follows:
Replacement Steeda CAI Filter Only - 05+ CAI / 99-04 V6 CAI
