When I first start the MM, the motor revs to 2000rpm then comes back down. Why would the motor rev to 2000 and then come down? This seems like a rod knock will develop pre maturely. Why would FORD want to start up like this?

Here's an older thread about the subject.

It is part of the computer's OEM programming and from what I understand can be lessened with a custom tune.
My Marauder is not a daily driver and upon start up would REV and clatter like a bucket of bolts!......... especially if she was sitting for a week or two.
I ended up installing a Canton Accusump Oil Accumulator to eliminate the dreaded "start-up rev-clatter".
*It seemed stupid to me too, that Ford would have a cold engine do this upon every fire up.

I think it has to do with getting the oil circulated QUICKLY under a "NO LOAD" condition......I don't think it will hurt anything but it does sound bad at times!!!:argue:

The clatter that can be heard is most likely the cam chain tensioners...at least that is what I have been told??

The 5 Mustangs I had before and the MM, all Ford V8 from the mid 80's, they all started like that, like a pissed off snake. Always make me smile.

Even my brothers 98 5.0 Explorer does it.

Must be a ford thing.

Completely normal and discussed every few months a new owner pops up.

I driven plenty of cars and they all revved up to 2000rpm and came down to idle. I believe its with the start up period. When the car first starts after not being ran, Its on the computer's duty cycle and it sprays more fuel to get the car started. If the Marauder has a different problem them I have no clue what does this.

My '90 7up Mustang did it and I cringed each time I started it . My Marauder revs to 2000 and sometimes a little more . My solution to the horrifying dry start sounds is to use the recommended Motorcraft (820 S I believe ) oil filter . If I remember correctly the S denotes an anti drain back valve . I only use other filters when they specify this valve and at least the dry start sounds are not present . Just my observations .

This is done for no reason other than to reduce cold start emissions. You can reduce this by changing a few things in the OEM calibration.
