View Full Version : Rear Spoiler's Air Flow Impact?

With the Rear Wing installed, has anybody reasoned or experienced any appreciable Postitive Impact on the High-Speed Air Flow over the Rear End that might enhance the Grip of the Rear Tires at say, speeds above 75 MPH?

Is it realistically, just a nice "Cosmetic" Enhancement?

  :( ;)

To be honest.....all I have been able to tell about the spoiler addition is the comments from everyone that sees it, and my opinion that the spoiler adds a certain distinction to the car....definitely makes the car....

That's Good Enough for me.

It is a distinctive, really Cool look for our cars, isn't it?

I believe it's cosmetic only. I haven't noticed any difference...

you probably won't know what good the spoiler does for you until you enter a turn at high speed and the guy you're racing pulls up soooo close that he takes the air off your spoiler, sending you up the banking, across the marbles, and into the wall. Until then, you may not notice its benefits. :(

I feel better now.

Uh.........Like Thanks Dude - you sure made Our day!

Just the thought of one of "Indiana's Finest", in a Big Black CV mirroring the appearance of my "Stealth Car", with Twin Spots on the Front Pillers, #45 Window Tint, Twin Antennas on the Rear Window, and Black Lug Nuts, Coat-Tailing me into the Sweeping Curve across the State Line on the Indiana Toll Road (Remember the Saucer 'Chase' scene in the Movie "Encounters of the Third Kind"), interupts my Air Flow over the Rear Spoiler, sends me up on the Road Shoulder and out into an Ohio Corn Field - causes me to have another Sleepless Night outside of Seattle.

I just hope the Trooper doesn't leave the scene and head back into Indiana, with a Final Blast from his Trio of "Wild Turkey" Trumpet Air Horns, as a parting shot!

He took the Mercury badges off and stuck a BMW M5 logo on there... Not sure why?

The basic Menancing and Intimidating Look of the MM, just seemed to me to beg for a few additional "Cosmetic Enhancements", to turn this into a Real "Stealth Car", and it's worked! This Car cuts through Traffic Snarls like a Hot Knife through Margerine, and when you're on the Road like I am for more than 25,000 miles a year, that seems important.

Debadging (Removing the Mercury 'broken hockey sticks" Badges) the Front Grill and Rear Deck, it seemed to add even More "Mystique" to the Car, given it's one inch elevation differential from Rear to Front.

Then after being told that my #45 Tinted Side / Rear WIndows and Darkened License Plate Bubble (to match the Darkened Tail Lamps / Backup Lamps), could result in a State Trooper citing me for them, as part of his "Discretionary Parameters" out on the open Road, my thoughts quickly transitioned to the concern that if he thought that I was trying to "Impersonate" a Law Enforcement Officer (ie Twin Spots on Front Pillers, Twin Antennas on Rear Glass, Dark WIndow Tint, Rear Plate that reads "COULD BE", etc.), he had the Rights and Powers to arrest me, send me through the Pipe Line of Cuffs, Finger Prints, Photos, Booking, and perhaps even Holding Tank Time.

Worse than that, they could Tow and Impound my Car, and cost me Big Bucks to retrieve it.

Then the Thought immediately came to mind - What other all Black, High Performance 4 Door Sedan "Could (it) Be"...............the $90,000.00 (If you can get the BMW Dealer down less than $10 Grand over Window Sticker) "BMW M-5".

That should keep me out of Jail, and pretty much URKS all of the M-3 and 745 BMW Drivers, when I zip past them and raise the RPM up through 4 K and on into 6 K.

Is there a "Down Side" to all of this?

I have noticed a few more minor Blemiishes and Dings in the rear Bumper, from all of these Round Blue & White BMW "Air Plane Propellers" and 3-Pointed Stars that were sucked off of the front end of a few German "Wannabees" that got too close, and fell victim to the Vacume created by my MM rushing past them.

(Thank you Dennis Rienhart! :) )

One morning when I was sitting in the Marriott Parking lot, letting my MM warm up to ambient tempratures, a fellow driving an INDEM Truck(Indiana Department of Environmental Management), pulled up close to me, and asked me if I was with the Federal Narcotics Squad. I quietly told hin "No", at which time he asked me if I was a Retired State Patrolman or something, and I told him "Well.... NO!

He went on to explain to me the Drug Lords were obtaining Ex-State Police Cars to make their runs in, because they are able run below the "Radar", in their "Bsiness Vetntures", and cautiond me to be "Careful".

With my car's "Profile".........I understood what he saying, and governerd my self accordingly.

Drive carefully, and be advised with due caution............

How much is the spoiler? Dealer was tossin it around on installing on my car prior to my purchase- but I just poo-poohed it and never asked- I cant picture it being a difficult install for a D-I-Y project Any suggestions?

Previous Quoted Prices herein have it across the Parts Counter into your hands and out the door for less than $240.00, based on the Sales Tax in your State. A Ford Parts Counter could pull it up for you starting with the Ford Probe Spoiler, then transitioning on over the the Mercury GM / MM Models.

It's apparently pretty easy to lay out on your Deck Lid with the Intallation Kit, and pretty simple to complete the Drilling, and Bolt it down.

Check out the previous Photos from Logan's Post, and other Posts referring to it.

Set your MM further apart from all of the others, as well as the "wannabees" GM & CV Sleds.
