Today, I went to the track for my first ever encounter with the 1320.
After 3 years of tweaking it was about time !
The timing was looking right: a few mods this year, the car in basic shape save a weird idle problem, and a soon to be stored for winter car. Last night, the thermometer went down to about 32° as there were a little frost over the glasses. Cool air and the day temp went about 60° F in the afternoon. A typical warm Canuck day.
My car is modded for all around performance so some mods are good for ETs some less:
- FIT Procharger 005 with 91 octane conservative tune (415 RWHP only),
- Meth injection for octane boost and chimical cooling (no timing added)
- Pirelli Scorpion truck street tires 285-50-18 (wider tread but Peterbilt height at 29.2 " and rain tread for most of it but still able to go 180 something miles per hour. One day I will have to check on this),
- 4.10 gear and Auburn LS,
- Kooks system but with 4 mufflers as I hate cabin drone noise,
- Stallion 3K stall converter,
- Metcos all around in the rear but with Addcos to stiffen things up in the curves
- And a few other change to help reliability and weight distribution like battery in the trunk and aluminum piping) but stock 40 000 miles engine and tranny.
I had a friend who came by to film this event and it was a regional, non professional track. No program, just opened to people willing to pay 10$ to enter and 2$ a run. I was told they put just a little resin early on at the opening and then let the fun goes by itself.
So I went early , bought 2 run tickets. Given the time posted on this site and my total inexperience and street tires, I wasn't expecting much : somewhere in the thirteen would had put me happy. But it went better than I though. Look below in pic my first run, the best one. The second run was made without resin and some tires chunks all over so the time was worst.
Preparation: Took off 14 pounds of air in the rears at a final 26 pounds, topped the meth reservoir and checked the oil. Pretty minimal I guess but the car is supposed to be in shape anyway. Half way tank, that's it. Spare still in the trunk ! I did put MarauderTJA T-shirt he gave me last march as it is light weight cotton and threw my pocket change away.
1- First run: Never saw a tree going down that fast ! Was in deep coma against a Honda ricer with a big menacing spoiler about the size of an hawaian surf board !
Reaction 1.499 (coma!)
but a great 12.555 at 111.48 MPH Yippee, Pretty lucky for a rooky ! :)
2- Second run against a sporty Toyota with a turbo
Reaction .648 (sleep had to be stopped)
but a bad 12.99 at 110.02 (Track prep seems to be pretty important)
I won over both and had the time of my life !! Now I know why you guys are so addicted !!
Thanks for reading. I"m already planning for next years ;)
