What are the best trans coolers made of ?
What by pass systems used is best for extreme cold weather ?
What gvw coolers do most marauders with after market torque converters 3ooo to 3500 stall speed mountain driveing and weekend drag raceing use?

I believe Mr Reinhart sells one, braided lines included, for something north of $300 IIRC. Perhaps a google search would help Burt find mfr sites which might have some of the info he is seeking. Searching this board will produce threads on the subject, and I recall some of our northern comrades just cover their coolers during winter weather to keep air from passing through. I've seen some info which shows coolers rated for certain gvw's, and other info which rates them by btu.

Another thought I've gathered from others: the cooler should be mounted in front of the radiator/ac condenser assembly so it is not bathed in heat coming off of same, and it should be tied in to the existing system after the existing cooler. The existing cooler is sandwiched between the radiator and the AC condenser, so it is heated by both.

Yeah I wonder all of the same things since I am going to have my trans flushed and have a trans cooler installed. Has anyone installed a B&M trans cooler that has a fan on it?

I was reading about this just yesterday as I'm planning to add a cooler. It seems most of the better coolers these days are of the plate type and are "self regulating", that is, they bypass when the oil is cold (thicker) and operate when the oil is warm (thinner). That sounds reasonable to me and would seem to not require coverage in cold weather. Here in northern VA it doesn't get that cold anyway.

I watched the trans temp carefully since adding my OBD2 gauge, first with stock tune (using converter lock-up) and with custom tune (lock-up only above 65). I DID notice the temps were a little higher with the custom tune (no lock-up). That's getting me thinking about getting the cooler. With outside temps in the 80s the trans temp ran about 180 freeway cruising with lock-up and ran about 190 freeway crusing without lock-up.

I have a thermostatic bypass for the trans cooler if anyone wants it up north.

Yes I have the B&M w/fan unit, the larger one. Only heard the fan come on this summer twice while in a traffic jam. Works well.

Where did you mount it?

I recall that Zack had one mounted inside of a fender?

I was wrong. It was Brian (aka fordnut). See his thread here (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=14222&highlight=b%26M+fan+cooler).
