I started investing 15% into my 401k about 2 yrs ago and have kept a very profitable stock portfolio since I was 18 so as long as I don't touch anything I will be set. If the war in Iraq ends within the next 3-4 yrs and nothing else happens their "should" be enough SS to last until 2081.

From 1946-96 average annual defense spending ~35+%.
1997 defense spending ~15%.
2006 defense spending ~20%.
Congress figured out they could buy a lot more votes with social spending than defense spending.
Fed, State and Local ~ $14,000 for every man, woman and child in this country. When you drive around or go to the mall look around and remember every person you see ~$14,000, then think of how much blood, sweat and tears it took to generate that ~$14,000 in taxes and think of how much of that ~$14,000 is an entitlement for half the people that never paid income tax.

For the past 3 years, I've been putting in roughly 6% in my 401k and I have a pretty good amount for a kid who's only 20. Luckily my company matches me too.

Percent of what? GDP? Annual budget?
Defense spending was 3.9% of GDP in 2005. Domestic spending at the same time was twice as much at ~8% of GDP. Check out the charts here >>>> http://www.heritage.org/Research/features/issues/issuearea/Defense.cfm
Domestic spending (Major Entitlements) and Military spending have reversed positions since about 1960. They were about equal at ~5% of GDP back in 1974.
