I believe that it is a glass insulator, the threads were used to wrap wire around,,,see this

My vote for glass insulator as well, if it's that old, perhaps for telegraph?

That is my guess as well. Probably a glass pole isolator for telegraph lines.

Could be a collectors item depending on the condition and whether the manufacturer's mark is still on it. I van pooled with a guy that collected and displayed such glass isolators that were used along railroad lines and such. It is a real hobby for some folks. Some of the glass and shapes are very rare. The guy showed me collector's books where some of these things were valued in the hundreds or even thousands of dollars. He would pick them up at yard sales and flea markets and the people selling them at 25 to 50 cents had no idea that they were worth big money. Of course, some are very common and not worth much.

Either way .... I would check it out further. You may have just found enough cash for your next mod.

A Pole isolator wouldn't be all metal. It's got too be some kinda screw used too tie down something to the ground. Looking at the Head of the screw it looks like it was made to wrap something around or hold something up. It's got to be screwed into something. Only a guess, maybe a old civil war cannon tie down.

actually, a tellegragh pole/line insulator is most likely correct, I'm just a few cards short of a full deck!

It could be this type of early insulator, but most of these appear to be rubber not glass. The threaded part would screw into a wood block or crossarm

Why not a perfume bottle stopper/applicator?

What are it measurements?

It is a neon tube support used to hold neon tubing to components of electric signs. As glass, it provides isolation/insulation between the tube and the metal body of the sign to prevent arcing. A stamped metal bracket is used to hold it and the bracket is mounted to the building or sign.

About 3 inches long, a little bigger round than a No.2 pencil.

If it's a neon sign holder upper, I don't know how it would end up where it was, usually all I find there is busted up old pottery and glass. LOTS of it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it isn't a sex toy. At least not specifically designed for that purpose, butt then again you can pretty much turn anything into a sex toy if you use your imagination. YOU HEAR ME JESSICA ALBA?!?!

I think this ^^^^ is the correct answer. :D

Found the following on the "Insulator Store Site" >>>> http://www.insulatorstore.com/proddetail.asp?prod=2258%2D10

It was used on early neon signs. Listed as a Neon Standoff Insulator "K", ID # 2258-10, Color- Clear, Embossing -- K in an elongated septagon. Value at the insulator store $9.50.

Not sure why it was at a civil war encampment site. :dunno:

Whoa, you two should form some sort of investigation team. I would never have guessed that's what it is. Maybe I'll put up pics of other stuff I've found and can't figger out what they are. A big thanks for clearing this up! I'll buy you's a soda pop on the 17th!
