For those of us that don't have the bling for a nice second car, but want to save our Marauders the horror and damage of driving in the snow, this thread's for you... :)

Here are a couple of shots of my winter beater. 1994 Town Car Executive. I picked it up last week for $650. It's missing a radio, the driver door needs hinges, it has a leaky pitman arm seal, and the ABS light is on.

Other than that, it runs great!

My criteria: A winter beater should look at least respectable, it should pass inspection, and it should cost less that $1000, repaired. I figure I'm going to need to put $100-$200 into it, just to get it tolerable. I haven't decided whether to replace the steering box, or just keep adding fluid.:D

Weather permitting, I'll flip it in April.

If you have thought about loving your Marauder this winter with a nice set of jack stands, and a car cover - go for it! There are lots of cheap rides out there, and you can probably get your money back in the spring.

What are your winter beater plans?

I have a 2006 Ford Taurus that I use everyday (since Florida winters do not exist) and keeps the miles off the Marauder and prevents aging and damage. Don't laugh - it's paid for!

Really nice second ride. No way you'll get me to laugh. Looks better than my Lincoln...

I want to see a WINTER BEATER! Come on. You know the kind. Typically they look like crap and cost a few hundred dollars. You ditch them in the spring. No one done this! What is this? A rich man's forum...:bigcry:

'89 Jeep Wrangler, the rust queen lives a hard life at Cape Hatteras, moved it up here last week for repairs. Found a blown U joint yesterday that I thrashed back to new and made the CAM meet at the Marine Corps Museum just in time. Today I pulled the dash and replaced the heater core so now I got heat and the defroster to work. Bead blasted the battery tray, redid the cables, put in a new driver seat, fixed the radio, worked on some rust, a good day all in all, now where's that pig? Time to watch the Redskins and NASCAR, cook pig and drink a Steinlager.Tom

No snow here yet. It just spits sleet and the occational flurry that sticks to NOTHING. Ground is still above 50, and night time temps are just hitting 30's.

1988 Pontiac Grand Am SE - Front Wheel Drive - Quad Four Engine.

Paid $400 - Had a blown Head Gasket.

Replaced the Head Gasket.
Repalced the Water Pump (It was cheap to buy, and a PITA to get to, did it when the Head Gasket was replaced).
Replaced the Battery (The one in it was ORIGINAL!!!)
Plugs, COPs, Air Filter, Fuel Filter...all the normal Tune Up stuff.
New Tires all around.
New Brakes all around.
Replaced the Alt (it died).
Replaced the Rear Shocks.
New Struts are coming next Spring.

A total of $1200 is in this car, including it's purchase. After the Struts, it will be about $1350.

I took this car from Columbus, OH to Louisville, KY and back. It averaged 28MPG! Not too bad for a Beater!!!

Here's my winter beater. I bought it two weeks before the Marauder in 8-04 for $400. Not counting oil changes, I've spent about $20 on it since then (one set of plugs and an air filter). There's no exhaust on it past the transmission pan and it still gets 20 mpg. The carpet is begining to fall through the floor so this might be the last winter for it. Think I should break out the Sawzall and make a four door convertable for spring?

Here's a shot of the Panther Ranch. On the far right is my '89 CVPI which served as winter beater/burnout machine from 2000-2003. I paid $400 for that one after talking him down from $850. I've since sold off $200 worth of parts. Chicks hated it, cops hated it, friends were embarrased by it. Most fun I've ever had with $400 in my whole life!

To the left is my '89 CV dailly driver (from the first pic) and my '04 SBMM.

My winter, summer, spring and fall beater is a MGM LSE. Studded tyres during the winter. Goes everywhere and brings me back home (I live in the Laurentian mountains, on top of a big hill) everyday since I bought it 2 years ago. Actually, that car gives me lots of fun in the winter.

My MM ? I had no problem when I drove it with "Blizzack" during its first winter here. But the roads are getting so dirty and so salty that I decided to use another member of the Panther family.

The last 2 winters has been the Marauder with the Pirelli Snow and Ice tires. Did great, went anywhere, but subjected to too much abuse with salt, sand, and other crap.

So, I now have the '03 CVPI as my daily drive/winter car. The winter wheel/tire setup from the Marauder just got put on this car this past Monday and good thing as we are heading well in to 6 hours of snow so far today with 2-3 inches on the ground. I do think I will need to add a little weight in the back of this car, though (never had to in the Marauder).

Front is 235/70-16 WinterForce M+S, rear is 255/70-16 (same tire brand). I followed suit from Dragcity. Yeah I would def call it the Urban assault vehicle, tire combo lifted the whole vehicle up an inch, no problem driving up over curbs or around in the mud lol.

Man, you are betraying your MM to make your 89 the clear weather ride:confused: Just giving the MM a break. It's been a DD for the past 2 yrs and has racked up 43K miles on top of the 40k that were on it when I bought it.

I like your collection! Your F-150 should be the winter ride. Surprised your MM isn't up on blocks for the winter season...

fastcar:burnout:MM up on blocks? LOL It's a car that is meant to be driven. Last year when we had a decent amount of snow it was a blast driving around in it, big tires just plowed right through the snow. The F-150 needs some new tires before it goes out in the snow, that's like the last chance emergency vehicle if I need to get out, otherwise it's just 2nd backup and weekend dump runner.

This was given to my friend about 7 years ago. He didn't use it so he gave it to me. Hasn't been registered since 2000. This one has a 4speed (with granny gear) and a 300i6. It ran over my cell phone last month. It bounced off the dash and hit the gound (there's not much floor left in it) and was hit by the rear tire. The phone still works.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c293/leadfoot302/th_I3010008.jpg (http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c293/leadfoot302/I3010008.jpg)

My outdoor wood boiler burns about 200 lbs wood/day in the winter. This rig has hauled 100% of it. That's about 210,000 lbs of wood. It's done that without an air filter or oil change.

I've had it up to 45 mph... it's got more, just don't want to find out how much more. The AM radio sounds great and the driverside headlight still works despite not having any glass left in it.

The box scrapes against the cab as I drive it which makes a downright hideous sound. The battery is held in with weed wacker line which I found in the bottom of my tool box.

With the repairs I've done in the last two weeks (rebuilt carb, new battery, and battery cables) I now have $115 wrapped up in it.

How's that for a winter beater?

Highway legal? Probably not. I highly doubt any cop in this state that would write me up in this rig though. I believe driving between farms, on a county road, at 15mph, during day light hours, is considered 'farm vehical" useage. It's akin to driving a tractor or combine.

Here is my winter beater, not as nice as other's here. Good thing I was driving it today, got rear ended by a large sport ute. Someone attempted to steal it, heck if they need it that bad, just ask!

Nice beater! That's a real winter beater. What did they try to steal, your beater or the SUV;)

Got good memories of a '88 XR-7...mom had one when I was in High School...Medium Scarlett Red. That thing was SUHWEET looking! Always found a way to borrow it ;).

Had a recent change of the guard in mclaneland. Had a diehard 1999
Olds Alero with leather and all...leftover from the wife when she got her
truck last year. We've owned it forever and nabbed almost 200K on
the OD....that is until last week on a trip to NJ for work.

Here she is sitting at the dealer lot...after I drove her (her name was
"Clarice") back from NJ with blown power steering. Previous symptoms
included brake pulse from the front discs and the gas gauge quit working
a couple years ago (too expensive to fix for what its worth). I DO take
care of my fleet...but old is old after a while...

Clarice (crappy Treo cam):

Clarice had to be replaced. :( After all is said and done I can't complain
about the years of service this GM gave me. "That'll do pig, that'll do..."

In with the new (not a beater). Found a good deal on an '07 Murano at my
sisters work (Grossmann in Old Saybrook, CT). My employer even picked up
the tab!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I guess I'm worth it and won't be going
anywhere for a while :o).

Changing of the guard...new car's name is Alyssa (Alyssa Murano...
get it?? If not, you didn't grow up in the 80's or were'nt a fan of the
TV show "Charmed" which isn't on the air anymore :P)

Alyssa (more crappy cell cam):

Alyssa and Smoke (on the left) got to know each other a little better
later on. Smoke isn't too keen on an import being her winter savior...
but I'm sure they will make amends sooner or later. At least the new
car is the RIGHT COLOR !!!

That's all for now. All this over Thanksgiving. Lot's to be thankful for
(more than just cars) on my end.

Best,
Jonathan

Someone tried to steal the 1991 Lumina, my winter beater. I found the lower dash cover hanging, foam block on the floor along with the instruction sheet that they left behind.

I was rear ended by a SUV today while driving the Lumina, notice the nice big wrinkle on the right rear quarter panel and the slightly lowered bumper.
The girls got off lucky as I said "don't worry about it" and I drove off. I only stopped to see if they were hurt.

if that car in the back of one of the pix was a Marauder then i got the wrong one

If you click on my "dohc" in my sig, you can read about my conversion of the "grandpa mobile" into a "sleeper".

88 cogar XR 7

I once had an '86 XR7 with the turbo 4cyl & stick shift, very light, handled nicely. It had over 150K on original motor & turbo when I sold it to my brother. He drove it until 170k with very few problems.

I also had an '88 XR7 with 5.0L V8--this was one of my favorites that I had owned. Kind of like a luxurious Mustang. Unfortunately, I sold it to a very nice older lady friend who proceeded to drive it to it's death, no maintenance done at all once in her hands. All I could do was look away, too painful to watch.

Nice story. Two Mercuries. Funny, I kept getting quotes from an insurer on a Mercury Murano by accident, every time I asked for Marauder!

I owned an 88 T-Bird Turbo Coupe, Black with Charcoal gray interior, 5 speed, what a beauty. So much fun to drive, and fun too look at. The only thing I hated was the 4-cylinder. I wish it had the SHO V-6 with a Turbo. Now THAT would have been a dream car:cool:

I was there last summer, wish I knew you were there we could of had a mini-meet...

You are welcome anytime.
It is more funny in the winter, though. Ski tracks of Mont-Tremblant and of Saint-Sauveur 30 minutes and 10 minutes away from my home, respectively. And skating rings - the roads - everywhere around !

'Show off' because your winter beater is as nice as most member's Marauders!

Thanks.
I lilke my MGM a lot. But even more in the winter. Probably because of its "traditional" technology and While heavier and less powerful, it reminds me - behavior wise - the FIAT 131 Abarth that I drove during 3 national rally competitions. That, when I was in Europe...more than 25 years ago.

I thought it was hilarious also, that's why I kept it! First of all, why a beat up junker as my 156k miles 1991 Lumina? Not worth the effort in my mind, unless they were just some punks practicing. I wish they didn't bugger up the key slot so bad, now it's a pain to put the key in sometimes.
Second of all, no wires were cut. I guess they were interupted or just could figure out which ones. LOL!

Third, the power steering pump was shot, you would think that the very large oil stain under the car would also be a sign of a junker! If they would of started it, I doubt they would be able to turn at the end of the block! I got sore elbows getting the car to the mechanic to get it fixed.

Yes, the four definately struggled at times. Good on gas, but had to stomp on it to move anywhere fast.
I don't remember exactly which years, but a Cougar had a blown 6 cyl. that I thought would be a great setup for handling. Never got the chance to drive one though.

My uncle bought a 1983 Cougar LS loaded off the showroom floor. It was the car that I learned to drive on, after a very short time behind a '79 (bobcat?). My brother was very fortunate to buy the '83 from him with very low miles & a great price as his first car. He loved that car. My uncle replaced it with a 1988 Lincoln LSC, then he got a 1989 Mustang GT. My uncle had great taste in cars.:)

That's just too funny!

I would have bet a $100 that the last time anyone tried stealing a 1991 Lumina was in 1992. Great winter beater though!

My friend had one. He called it The Zooom-mina.

It is nice to know that when the salt trucks are out, this is the car that will be pelted & not my Panther anymore!

This is a true beater, my boss calls it "the ghetto-mobile".
You may have noticed no hub caps, well they were stolen twice. I mind as well gift wrap them for the thieves:rolleyes: No more freebies, that's how it always looks now.

Good thing that this car only cost me $200 to buy :), but about $900 to fix so far, :censor: state inspections! :(

The dash cover is so wavy all around the edges, I wonder how it stays in place.
