View Full Version : Rear rotor removal?

Anyone have any suggestions to get the rear rotors off. I have never done rear disc brakes and was wondering if there was something I had to do to the parking brake to get the rotors off (yes the brake is off)? I tried prying on them and smacking the rotors with a mallet and have not been able to get them to budge (and yes the retainers have been removed). The fronts came off with ease using brake cleaner and a couple of taps with the same mallet. Has anyone had to use a puller to yank theirs off? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

You might have to hit them pretty hard with a heavy hammer in order to loosen them. Hopefully you are changing them because they might get damaged in the process.
Be sure not to hit the threads.

When I changed mine I carefully heated the rotors with a propane torch. Did the trick for me.

I did just about everything to them, heating, cooling, heating, cooling, NOTHING! Finally, I beat the absolute ***** out of them, and they just fell off. If anyone says, "PB Blaster will do the trick!" I'll drive to your house and slap you! Just about everyone told me that, I used about 1 can per side, it didn't help!

This is what I thought. I was worried about messing up the parking brake setup inside of the rotor that is why I didn't go to gorilla tactics yet. It's okay if the rotors get messed up I have a new set of slotted and cross drilled rotors cryo-treated rotors waiting for a home. I'll try smacking the crap out of them and let you know.

the bigger the hammer the easier it is. I ended up using a full size sledge. was sooooo afraid that I was going to hit the car. AHHH.

Yup. My brake guy told me the rears were frozen on so bad they came off in pieces when he beat the f*** out of them with the BFH.

I used a prybar between the rotor and the caliper mounting bracket while using the BFH, after hitting it with the propane torch. 100000kms on original rotors, it kinda sucked.

What cause's this problem? Is this a Marauder specific problem?

No anti-seize was applied at the factory is my understanding.

Gear puller to apply pressure and Oxy/Acetylene to loosen them up. Two taps with a dead blow hammer and off they came without damage...

Liberal amount of Anti-seize upon replacement.

And don't you love the way the parking brake shoes fall apart??

You don't need the BFH to do this one, just replaced mine almost two months ago.

Just make sure the parking brakes are released and use a puller to clamp around the edges of the rotor, while you turn the really long screw. I had my phone set-up for a great video because it made this magnificent pop when I did the first one, but my cousin couldn't operate the camera. All we did was hit it with some WD-40, then crank crank crank. Rotors came out fine.

The only reason I didn't do the BFH was cuz I was working at around 11pm. :D

I use a BFH and a block of aluminum but I like his ^^^ idea better.
