Shopping for an HD TV

So I was in my local discount TV stereo Place, called Soundsaround.

I was up in the sony room looking at the Sony LCD TV's and then stepped out into the Sony showroom and was watching the different HD braodcasts. The football game was nice but up close you can see the LCD pixels. The travel show was very good and showed how the different sets picked up on and displayed things differently. Then I spotted a road race rally like programme. It was great, cars shooting past here and there I really liked it, Cars I knew some I didn't wasn't sure who was racing but it was great. Then I realized...

It wasn't a HD programme at all it was a preview for Grand Turismo on PS3. Amazing graphics. Just like real.

I just got the best birthday present of them all. A 52 in Sharp Aquos with base and an XBox 360. Man my woman loves me.:banana:

Check out Toshibas and Samsung as well they are quality products. I purchased a Toshiba Projection 57H81 back in 2001 and no problems.

I set myself up with a overhead projector with a 83" pull down screen with 5 point surround sound setup , that I installed. Upstairs in the living room, we have a 55" plasma on a retractable arm, have four speakers mounted up in the ceiling. The speakers are connected to a receiver. Next thing that we are thinking about is to mount outside speakers on the deck, for music.

I just purchased the 42" Sony Bravia LCD that does [1920xsome big number] with 1080p and can be a computer monitor too. I must have stood in Best Buy for almost 2 hours looking at everything they had, comparing black levels, contrast, colors, everything. To me, the Sony had the most features and best picture. YMMV

What he ^ said. Make sure it is TRUE 1080P. Lots of manufacturers like to tell what resolution they can get but exclude 1080P in the description, because it ain't that good.

I like Toshiba also, but for a price reason since Sony can tend to be $$$$.

Completely agree - 1080P should be a requirement, particularly for any TV over 42". To be honest, I don't think it is worth the money on 42" and smaller screens.

I've got a 1-year old Samsung 46" LCD (4696, which uses the same screen as the Sony XBR2, different electronics for a fair bit less), and enjoy my collection of ~70 HD movies (have both HD DVD & Blu Ray), along with HD Cable... Problem is, I'm finding that I'll watch bad programming in HD, versus something good in SD. :D

I didn't say I OWNED a 1080P, just that it is what to buy.

I have planned out what I would own if I had the dough lots of times. :)

I'm still on my 780i Toshiba 52" projection. I like it but I see the improvements in the new stuff (this TV is 5 years old now - still nice but not worth the risk/cost of moving it) I will sell it with the house or rent this house with the TV (if the market stays crappy) when I move next summer.

The new house gets a 1080P 65" flat panel, uh, something. And about 1 miiiiiilllllllllion watts of power to the speakers . . .

Yeah guys, check out an XBR series sony, they have the bravia engine PRO and is absolutley the best for lcds, especially with the motionFlow. And as far as 1080p is concerned, you can only achieve that high of a resolution progressively through an HDDVD, or Blu-Ray disc player. "upconvert" dvd players that say 1080p output is crap, its not true HD. Blu ray players have upscale chips in them which will actually make old dvds look better than a regular upconvert. Just get a playstation 3 with the built in blu ray, and play some Call of Duty 4 online. :D

And yes do not buy philips, they don't even have pc inputs...:shake:

I have the sony XBR-4 lcd 46 inch FULL HD 1080p. BEST PICTURE EVER. Whatever you decide to buy make sure you get the HDMI cable.:D

My wall space would only fit a 42", got the Sharp,I love it. I have broadcast with an antenna on the roof and now I get 100 channels,each channel I pick up has 3 or 4 hidden channels behind it.Tom

Just bought a Samsung 56" LED DLP. Niiiiice! The colour is amazing, and you can't see individual pixels like an LCD. It actually has better resolution than my computer monitor (Samsung 215TW).

Then went to Costco, and they had the 73" (?) on for $200 more than I paid for the 56"er. Darn. But the 56" is plenty big. 73" wouldn't fit on my entertainment unit.

720p's are being discounted if you are looking for
a good picture on up to 42inch at a good price
720's are sufficient most cable signals are upconverted
HD and not true HD. unless you purchase a true HD-DVD
player you will not use the full 1080 capabilities of these
screens.This is is if you are looking for a better tv and not
breaking the bank! They run between $700 and $900.
and have sufficient quality for the averge viewer.

Just bought the Mitsubishi 73" last week and they deliver it Wed! Yeeeeee Ha! I have been shopping for a big screen for over two years! It's taken a while but the best comfort in waiting is WAY BETTER technology keeps coming out!

Look out for actually CHEAPER SETS from Mitsubishi in 2008. They are releasing a laser driven video section on the Diamond DLP sets. They will be 1/3 of the price to produce and Mitsu says they will pass those savings on to the end user to try and outsell all competitors!

I think I'm going to pick up a 32" Sony LCD.

My space isn't big enough for a 42" and I have a 100" projector for movies and such.

Same room the tv sits behind the screen when in use.
