I noticed oil streaks all over the inside of my rear wheels and could smell burned oil when I walked next to rear left wheel/tire. I automatically assumed I had bad axle seals/axles. I had no noise but figured it was a matter of time.

Took the car to my local Ford certified repairs center and got an estimate to install the axle repair kit for $600 total out the door, since there is a known problem with the early production axles I called Ford to see if they would help me with the repairs, they agreed to after my axles were pulled and shown to be defective. My car has 47,000 miles so I am out of warranty.

Anywho I take the car today to have axle kit installed, my mechanic put my car in the air and walked over to order the axle kit and meanwhile I go under my car and start looking around...this is where it gets embarrassing, I had told Ford my axles were bad, told my service writer I have bad axles, told my mechanic I have bad axles. I looked under my car and there is oil all over my mufflers, control arms, bottom of car above the front of the differential.

I quickly realized I jumped the gun on the bad axle/seal issue...I have a bad pinion seal, I walked over to my wrench and told him to cancel order on axle kit and asked him to look at the front of my diff. Anyway, yes I was very embarrassed about my crappy diagnosis (these guys will probably never believe anything I tell'em ever again)

The car was quickly fixed and I paid $288 for the repairs, I don't know if it is a great price but I waited a total of 2 hours from when I arrived without appointment to walking out the door so I am satisfied...and humbled.:o

% first I have heard of it.

Although I think I frequently know what is wrong I allways resist telling the shop f0r fear that by doing so it will prejudice their diagnosis.

If I think it is due to a common defect I will mention I have heard others have had a problem w/ X.

If I bring it to a shop and tell them Y is borken and to fix it only to latter drive the car and find out it is Z I can only blame myself.

I have never, ever changed diff. fluid on any car I've ever owned, never a driveline problem of any kind...the Marauder is definitively the exception...maybe I am enjoying this car too much.http://www.motorcitymarauders.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Hi Smokie;

even the best need to give it a visual inspection to be sure.

good thing none of the Diff fluid got on the tread, could have been dicey.
