Hey Steve...my parent in Fla. are finally breaking down and buying their first computer.
Is this a reliable machine?
Will it be ok for newbies that only want to surf the net and send/receive emails?
Will play dvds and such.
I ask because I trust your opinion.

When did DELL make a new computer? Its a sweet deal...but I am not a vista fan!

Yep, stick with XP if you can get it...got a new ultra-portable Gateway with Vista Business and I have mixed feelings about it. I can handle driver snags and get comfortable with it (even like some of the new layouts for moving through directories), but should've ordered it w/ XP.
Get into Vista on/about service pack 121 and you'll be fine...;)

Many of the units listed on that page can be ordered with EITHER Vista, or XP.
I prefer Xp ;)

Steve,
Mom just called...she wants it now.
Is the basic processor as advertised ok?
Or should I have her bump up one to the $75 add up?

C-Net reviews electronics...here is a link to some reviews, with a few Vostro mixed in, but they don't seem to review any with XP (maybe some with Vista):

Our IT department jumped on it, and we did get XP instead of Vista. Pretty decent little laptop.

Just as an update....I recently threw my compaq at the wall.
The HD is toast. It works occationally now.
I bought this DELL VOSTRO (for myself this time) today and was pleased to find that not only is it still available, but for $549, with a bigger HD (260Gb), free shipping, and delivered to my door for $590!
Intel Duo
