There one in the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit with fold out deflector plates. The height of the deep-Vee scoop had to be some 12 feet tall. Used 2 locomotives to push it.

My guess is that they also use something similar in Europe in the snow regions of Bavaria, Switzerland and Austria.

My guess is an empty wood skid pallet (http://www.woodenpackaging.co.uk/SinglePallet1.jpg).
