:help:...Hello wondering if anybody can help me out before i go to a professional diagnostic check...latley i have been hearing a light knocking noise from the engine @ start up....when i rev the engine the noise speeds up and then dies out...could this be loose pushrods hitting valve covers??? or some thing else???...I'm a young guy and i know little about motor mechanics...:shake:, so I appreciate any help in concluding what this noise is...:help:

Thanks,
lc

It might be carbon build up on the piston tops.
Run some SeaFoam through it and re-evaluate.

mine does the same for about 30seconds when i start it up cold. wouldnt worry about iot

Have you tried knocking back?

Seriously, put it on jack stands and have someone rev it while you try to isolate where it is coming from.

Years ago my ’68 cougar started to knock on start up and my dad added some STP oil treatment to it. The problem went away, however the car had between 60 and 90 thousand miles on it. I heard the newer cars are sensitive to increasing the oil viscosity by using heaver oil or addition of an oil additive.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

So, I would recommend you change the oil with the correct oil as the oil in the car may have broken down to thinner weight oil. Also some people at this site said different oil filters seem to make a difference so use a different filter. I have 45 thousand miles on my MM and use a Pennzoil filter but other people swear by Motorcraft filters.

my noise only happens when warmed up at idle, so its not the same, but mine has been diagnosed as either piston slap, or piston pin knock. I thought it was a lifter/follower issue.

Mine does the same, only after full warm-up, sounds like a knock, then fades and comes back, dissapears above idle. 20K miles later and dozens of full throttle runs I no longer worry about it. If it was a problem I would have blown the engine ages ago. Drive it like you stole it and remember 5HIT happens to everyone.

I actually get the same knock in my 2003 P71.. Kinda annyoing. :/

The Modular motors do not use push rods.
I would drain the oil overnight, Use correct weight, NO STP.

mine did exactly the same one week after i bought it ...took it back and they put a remaned engine in it....#7 & #8 cylinder out of round and causing piston noise

I asked my tech about this he said when he went to class on the 4.6 32 v they told him this is normal for a few seconds until oil gets to top of motor no harm done. [when starting engine]

I heard that it is the cam chains slapping until the tensioners get pumped up!!?? I used to hate to start the car after an oil change because of the clattering!!!:argue::mad2:

I now have the remote oil filter and can fill the FL-1A full before installation.....NO MORE RACKET!!!

As long as your oil pressure is good and it goes away in a few seconds, I wouldn't worry about it!!:shake: These little (BIG) motors are pretty darn tough!!:D

My 05 GM does that, almost since day one. However it has nearly 55K miles on it and runs great, but still knocks at start up. Oil change, filter change made no difference.

My Marauder has had no unexplained mechanical noise since I bought it new, 52K mile ago.

If your engine is not smoking or using oil then I wouldn't worry. May need to add some carbon cleaner additive as previously suggested. But I wouldn't put anything in the motor oil.

BTW you are using the correct weight oil 5W-20? Synthetic blend or full synthetic?

Your post states you are inexperienced in motorlogy so we may need more info. How Many miles on the car? How often do you change motor oil/filter? How do you drive the car (fast, slow, mixed, race it everyday), what kind of gas (octane rating) and brand do you use and have you changed the air filter, fuel filter at the prescribed times?

May also be something external to the engine like a pulley tensioner, belt slap, water pump.

You could have a trusted (emphasis added) qualified shop/mech do a diagnostic on locating the sound's source. But remember these people are in the business of selling stuff and you may look like an easy mark.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all of your replies, but i took it in for diognostics....tech there says it could be a piston rod or a wrist pin...which i was told thats pretty major....my cars milage is around 49,000 and i purchased the car around a little less than 9,000 miles ago...to tell u guys the truth, i haven't had a oil change since purchase...:banned:...yeah i know i should be...anywayz...the shop called asking me permision for the brake down of the engine, to see what the problem is....service contract provider will then evaluate to see if im covered...yeah i know...huh...:shake:...tech says the oil is still good, but im wondering if ill get nipped in the butt for missing, to say the least, one oil change....:alone:...

How do you feel about putting seafoam through an SC motor?

Is the factory warr still in effect?

We have had reports of members agreeing to a diagnostic, told they need a new engine not cov'd or we won't know if it's cov'd until Ford rep inspects.

Then they are charged $2k to put the broke engine back together.

One MM owner refused because he never authorized any $ expenditure, they piled all the parts in the trunk, still full of oil and told him to come have the MM towed. They trashed his car real bad. A reman MM long block is ~$4,500.

When Nasser was booted Ford took a hard nose on warranty. Before Ford agrees to spend $6,500 they will look at the oil changes.

I would get a sample of the oil and for $20 send it off for analysis. You can siphon it out the dip stick if you can't get it from the drain plug.

Not sure if it's still under factory warranty, How can i find out...???...and where can i send my oil sample for analysis if it could be covered...???

Ive never used Seafoam, for the record.
I beat the snot out of my cars and dont need it.

You can ask your dealer or Roy L Pita.

There are dozens of oil anal labs, pick one.

before risking the stealer-ship shuffle: try zack's suggestion. he knows what he's talking about, at least on these cars.

I had something similar this past summer on the Mustang, thought the same thing. It turned out to be the timming chain guiders (plastic) crack ed and was rubbing on the chain causing the ticking noise. Cost me around 800.00 to have the timing kit done. Wheeeww. I thought for sure a new shortblock was in order...
