View Full Version : Who uses Ipod music in their Marauder...

A group of (older) guys ... myself included... were discussing satellite radio and how bad our local radio stations are...we agreed that we are tired of fooling with CDs (I have the 6 cd player in my Marauder)...
and we really don't like the idea of spending $10.00 or so for satellite radio...
One of the guys pointed out that the reason satellite radio is not doing as well as expected is that the younger guys are using Ipods for their music and playing it through their car systems (as well as at home, joging or where-ever)...
HOW MANY OF Y'ALL ARE USING iPODS FOR YOUR MUSIC...?
Does it just plug into the cars system...?
Thanks in advance for the input....:D

I am currently using my iPod in my MM. There are different options available depending on the head unit you are using. The avic D3 that I have has an iPod connection in the back of the unit. It was installed at the time the head unit was installed. Alot of the current head units available have iPod capabilities. If not, you can purchase a wireless fm transmitter for your iPod. The quality is not the greatest, esp. if you are in a big city. The transmitter will send the iPod signal to a predetermined frequency, such as 88.5 or something not often used. I believe some head units also have a plug in 1/8th" jack on the face of the unit, in which case you just need an 1/8th" x 1/8th" cable and hook directly up. I do love having the iPod in there. I just leave it in the glovebox at all times and have ready access to hundreds of songs.

I've got the Kenwood ddx-8019 and I have ipod video functioning...love it! I also use it infinitely more than satellite. I download podcasts for long trips. I do like sports on Sat Radio so I actually do both. I also get HD radio and of course CD/DVD/regular radio!

I took out my factory 6-CD changer, installed a 12-CD changer. I currently have a Omnifi with a 60GB hard drive. Holds more music than I own!

It fits nicely in the factory CD changer area. You will need an RCA input to the radio.
This is how it looks in the trunk

I use a simple MP3 Player and a transmitter that plugs into the cigarette lighter. Works pretty good.

I have satelite radio and I love it... I wanted to hook the iPod to my stock system, but that is not possible... Aftermarket car stereos have an aux plug in on them and our stockers do not... you can buy a cigarette lighter plug in that goes over the fm frequency but the sound in very clear at all... I don't think there is a good way to play iPods on our stereos... the satellite radio has an option that plugs in line with the fm radio antenna cable and can totally override a station and the sound in like I am listening to a cd and can just flip around channels to whatever I want to listen to

I'm using a Microsoft Zune plugged in with a cassette adapter....kinda simple, but works good.

Yes, the cassette adapter works well. Just has a dummy cassette, contacts the deck heads and the wire exiting the dummy plugs into the iPod.
I can't stand all that ***** in my car though, so I swap out CDs in my changer every so often, and keep American Graffiti in the console.
I must be old and boring, how much more media do we friggin' need....?

4 CD's loaded in changer and 1 up front.
The radio is for road reports and news.
How much listening to music are you doing in your car?
7 CD will give you 9.8 hours of music. Just make yourself some nice CD's on your computer.

I used a PIE interface and took out the 6-disc because I never use it. I have a headphone jack that goes into my IPOD. Whats even cooler is I'll take my lappy and put it on the shifter when we're parked and watch a movie through the cars stereo. I love it.

i used to have sirius... they still have playlists like any other FM radio station does. after a while if you listen to the same stations... same old same old.
i have pioneer head unit and hard wired ipod adapter. ipod in the console control using steering wheel controls.
This earlier iPod thread about the FM transmitters is worth a look (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=40682&highlight=Mad1).
I'll repeat my own testimony below, for those too lazy to click the link above.
Seriously, I have to struggle to remind myself to listen to NPR on the actual radio every once in a while now that I've had an iPod nano (2-Gig) for about a little over a year. I use it to listen to music, podcasts of my favorite NPR programs, audio books, and even children's stories (for my grandson's listening pleasure.)
For Christmas, I got a set of headphone where the iPod nano just nestles into one of the ear pieces so there isn't even any cords now when I want to listen to music while I work out or do chores. I even saw a set of noise canceling headphones with a digital FM tuner and an audio in jack, so I can retire my earlier analog version w/o audio jack, which I use when operating power tools or mowing the lawn (4-hours for 6 acres). Awesome!
My wife's new Explorer came with free satellite radio ... and we never, ever use it. Just the iPods. (Her's was a Valentine's Day present ... cherry red nano with 4-gigs of space.)

I've had a great time with my RoadTrip mount (a radio broadcaster with digital display) and I've used it extensively on long trips in several models of vehicles, as well as around major metro areas. (Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Louisville, Cincinnati, Atlanta and Detroit) It came with multiple adapters to fit any flavor of iPod as well.
Best of all, it charges the iPod, while you drive. I use mine with an iPod nano inside the armrest power point, so that I don't even have to "hide" it when I park somewhere public. The pointpoint plug also comes with a very flexible "extension" so that you can customize it where ever the car designers put those stupid power points in the future or in when you switch makes/models.
It has a few other features that make it worth recommending. You can pull off the "radio" RF part and just use a regular audio jack cable to run into a MP3 input, when or if you get a new vehicle. Then the "strength" of the RF signal is not a factor anymore. (That's how we use it when driving in my wife's new Explorer. The RF part also comes with a USB plug, that lets you put it on your computer and "broadcast" off your computer (just plug in a cable from the computer sound card to the RF box.)
You can also go the 'cassette adapter' route too. Those work fairly well with our OEM stereo and I never had any problems with mine.

I use the Griffin iTrip FM transmitter for my Ipod. Works great and never had a problem. Even when driving through downtown Seattle.

The ipod is junk so stay away. It is just something we are all told to have because it is the latest thing. The songs will not sound as good compressed into something the size of a cell phone and this device is hurting more than it is helping unless you only want benefit for yourself by stealing music as most do these days.
I've had Sirius Radio for over two years and I love it. One of the reasons is because my music taste was never really on the radio or most died out. I could never find the band Fear or The Anti-Nowhere League on the radio and stuff like Ricky Nelson and Duane Eddy seemed to die out. I am thrilled to hear this music, but I will say one thing: Lately Sirius has been putting subliminal commericals in the DJ talk and I always call and complain about this. They'll sound like cool cats at first and than if you really listen to them you know they are just marketing something. Like one time Handsome Dick Manatoba on channel 25 was saying how crappy new tv shows are and later mentioned a new dvd box set coming out from The Honeymooners or something... see... commercial!
If I hear this I change the channel before I know what their trying to get into my head. I love quite a few channels though and a lot you wouldn't hear on FM or even AM at times. Sirius is worth every penny and ten bucks a month isn't bad to me. Hearing a DJ makes the drive for me a lot more enjoyable than listening to song after song on your CD or icrap that you already know. Sirius radio will open you to new music and stuff you didn't even know about. There are quite a few bands/songs I never heard before that I love now and I'm glad about it.
Or you have one ofher choice: If you are truely old you will have some vinyls. (the only way music should be heard if you ask me) Take those records and get them put on CDs. I have a record player that can do it all on one that I got from Target on my last birthday. No compuer b.s. Just put in a blank disc and let it record off the record, Two buttons, it's as simple as that.
If you are still interested in an ipod working in your Marauder contact KillJoy. He's got it figured out. I'm done.

While Dom is right on some fronts... calm down!
I have a 46G music collection. Somewhere north of 2000 CD's. Sometimes, I'd like the convenience of a jukebox.
MP3 compression really kills musical quality and nuances. For a trip, I'll make MP3 CD's of about 140 songs each just for background music. For real listening, you need the actual CD.
Not all of us steal music. However a main problem I have with iPod is I can't do what I want with my music. Stuck with AAC format, licensing, iTunes. Kaka! Trouble is, the aftermarket is fully integrated with iPod and nothing else. It sux.
So, for now, no jukebox. Just a visor full of themed MP3 CD's. I guess I have 1800 or so songs at a glance. It's working for me.

I've found a lot of folks agree with you on the fact that MP3 compression kills the quality... I'm being swayed to really load up some CDs...

No. It wasn't a problem, nothing underneath, I used short stainless steel screws. You could try mounting it somewhere else.

What about those kits I see on E-Bay that allows you to hardwire an Ipod to the factory radio? Has anyone tried one of those?

Non audiophiles can not hear the difference in music or songs above 64 bit per second compression. For us audiofiles MP3's suck, so do tapes, (non DAT) CD's etc...
I love my SACD's and when I can I will upgrade to a Sony in car SACD player. Until then I listen to crappy cd's. MP3's depress me. Then again marauder speakers and my dead amp/sub mean I can't hear anything better than a CD anyway.
Super loud and thumpy subs depress me even more.

I attach my iPod inside my console so it's hidden. I can dial it up on my Alpine head unit. I can skip the songs using the existing controls on my steering wheel.
I also have Sirius.
