I had a misfire, the check engine light came on and I read the code, Misfire #5. I then spend 30 minutes looking throught the 1999 Helms manuals I have for the CV/GM and nowhere in volume 1 or 2 is there a chart of the cylinder designations. I even looked in the electrical manual, they show a nice picture of all the coil connectors on the engine, and then label them with ONE arrow, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8.

So, I make the normal assumption that cylinder 1 is front left, odd on the left side and even on the right side. That means that #5 is 3rd from the front on the left side. Does anyone disagree? Who's got a service manual that had a cylinder designation chart? This shouldn't be that difficult. But since I replaced coil and plug and still have the problem I want to make sure I "fixed" the right one before I continue the troubleshooting.

Thanks.

Looking, may be different.

Cylinders 1-4 are on the right side of the block with one in front and four in back near the firewall.

Cylinders 5-8 are on the left side of the block with five in front and eight in back near the firewall.

back
4 8
3 7
2 6
1 5
front

This is easier than dealing with GM's and Chrylser's way of numbering cylinders, IMHO.

Yep...I remember Ford V8 cylinder designations because the brake master cylinder was always in the way whenever I was changing the plugs on #7 & #8.

Was pretty sure, 5 is left front. SOHC diagram, but block numbering is the same.

Ford's done it this way for years. I don't know when they started. I believe they were numbered this way on my dad's 58 Edsel 361.

Thank-you everybody. And yes I have mostly worked on GM vehicles. If anybody finds a call out/diagram in the dealer service manual for the cylinder designation let me know, it seems like someone forgot to put the chart in the helms manuals for people who may not have ALWAYS worked on Fords.

Thanks.
