Well I talked to my drummers dad and he told me is needs a new master cylinder. How hard is this to replace? Do we simply take the old one off the firewall and put on the new one or is there more too it? I can look up the costs myself I guess, but it this a simple swap?

yup just that easy. will have to bleed the brakes but how hard is that?
It may be very hard as the bleeders could be frozen up. Plus you may encounter a lot of other brake problems and rotted out lines. I would leave that job to the profesionals Dom.

I find it ironic as a that I have to be certified in AC to even handle refridgerant without the possibility of being fined, yet people who should not even own a wrench can do whatever they wish to their cars.

When replacing a master cylinder.
Bench-bleed the master cylinder before installing on the car
Bleed the brakes following the normal procedure... ie farthest wheel from the master cylinder first
