View Full Version : Top Speed On A Arizona Highway....

On the way to Barrett Jackson last week I decided to see how my 04 MM ran in the triple digits.
To my surprise it ran damn good until the cut off at 125-127 mph.
I've read some other threads here and it seems that cut off is about right for a stock MM but my question is why so low?
These other threads mentioned driveline vibration but my MM was vibration free and to be honest felt more stable at 125mph than any other cars I've owned so I'm not sure I'm buying the cut off was put in for vibration.
What is the speed rating for the stock tires? Do you think that was more likely the reason for the factory cut off?
Just disappointed it wouldn't go higher. I was truly impressed on how great the car felt and just wanted more.

Hi Steve;
I think the speed limiter is for the driveshaft. The stock BFG tires are Z rated for up to 149 mph.
A tune from Alternative Auto (Lidio) will remove the limiter, give you firmer shifts, better shift schedule and a few more ponies.

Ok then it wasn't for the tires so I guess vibration stands but if the vibration is so bad how do the leos drive these cars at speed?
And yes I would love a Lido tune and some gears but I just know it will bite me with the Ford Warranty somehow and I'm not willing to pay for a tranny or engine when I have a zero deductible 100k warranty.

P71s also have limiters. There are two different limits - one for the 3.55 rear gear and a lower one for the 3.73. It's been a while since I read it, but if memory serves, the 3.55 has a 130 limit and the 3.73 is lower than that. Has something to do with driveshaft harmonics.

A Lidio tune can be uninstalled in about 20 seconds if you run into problems. Ford would have no record of the tune having been in the car. Additionally, it is unlikely that you would have any problems with the car related to his tune.

i dont htink he ment he would have problems cuz of the tune he just ment if he had an overall problem.'
but like master said theres no way to tell if you have changed the tune or not

When did P71's have a 3.73 RAR? I thought the highest rear gear you could go with was a 3.55. If some did come with 3.73's, wouldn't you think Ford would have used that than a 3.55?

P71 3.27 gear = 129 mph +/-
3.55 gear = 119 mph +/-

The FHP MMs have had OEM driveshaft swapped out for and improved version that is more stable and designed for sustained higher speeds.

I believe Dennis installed Metal Matrix driveshafts in some (if not all) of them.
I determined that the driveshaft speed with 3.55 gears at 120 MPH is the same as about 103 MPH with 4.10 gears. If the Ford engineers set that as the limit, I'm not one to argue - even though I know several have had good results with the stock drive shaft and 4.10 or even higher.
I went with the MM driveshaft, knowing that it may have been unnecessary. I do need to run close to 90 at times to keep up with Atlanta traffic, and that's close enough for me to justify the insurance.

With 3.73's I hit 145. It was DAMN smooth.

Yes I undesrand I can put the stock tune back if the car needs to go to the dealer but I was under the impression that there is a date/time recorded somewhere and that it might look funny that the computer was flashed on 01/22/08 and then brought into the dealer on 01/23/08
By problems I didn't mean by the lido tune I meant overallcar problems. Right now the car is at the dealer for several leaks. One is a pinion leak. I'm pretty sure Ford would not cover this repair if they saw I had changed the gears.

Steve,
I posted a similar thread several weeks ago. Anyway I hit 130 before I let off; I didnt hit the limiter. I was under the impression that our limiter was set to 117MPH so for me it was a suprise. I had a 2000 Mustang GT lowered with Vogtland springs and Tockico HP blues and was very stable at speeds. Suprisingly the MM was just as stable if not more. At that speed (140 in the stang) it was awfully noisy in the Mustang; different story in the MM; SMOOTH.

Don't be so paranoid about this Steve!!:shake:
I have had my car over 4 years and now have 161K miles on it and only had one warranty repair that required the OBDII for diagnosis......LCM was replaced free under warranty and I HAD and SCT tune in it at the time!!
For pinion seal they normally don't open the differential and even if they did most techs wouldn't know 4.10's unless they set out to find them....even then they probably wouldn't care!!??
The EEC only stores data for 300 hours then re-sets (I think Mac posted this way back when) and if you set it back to "stock" they will only read "stock" output info.
Do what you wish...it's your car.....but you won't believe how much better it will perform over all!!
Don't buy a tuner JUST so you can safely(??) run 140 MPH!!!:shake:
My $0.02....FWIW??:bandit:

Having owned Grand Nationals & Sy-Tys I've seen how the factory has tried to void the warranty. Things were simplier back then and all the factory could do is use paint & decals to seal the ecm up.
Even though our all aluminum motor with multiple cams seems to have a good track record its still an all aluminum motor with multiple cams that does smoke on start up.
Now on the other hand I do mainly city driving and am getting tired of such poor off the line performance which keeps me thinking of the Lido tune & gears.
I suppose if my MM was a daily driver I would probably have already done the gears but with it being driven just once or twice a week I haven't had the incentive to go for it.
Can get a Lido tune that will work with both the stock gears and the upgraded gears? By that I mean purchase & install the Lido tune now with the car being stock and then down the road change the gears without having to purchase another Lido tune.

Steve,
I cannot speak for Lidio but you can call him and inquire about the tunes he sends out on tuners!! I think he sends 2 or 3 and you can get them the way you want??
Go to Forums....Supporting Vendors....Alternative Automotive and hook up with him to get ALL your questions in this thread answered!!
Good Luck!!

I've had my car in for a check engine light, it as a bad o2 that was done under warranty, it was flashed with DR's tune at the time. No one said anything.

I've been thinking about a new drive shaft but I just don't think I will ever need to go that fast. The fastest I have driven in a car was 115 MPH, in my Cobra. I don't drag race, except between lights and always under the posted limit. I do speed when passing cars on highways or motorways but most roads are now multilane so it is not needed anymore. Come to think about it the fastest I have ever moved, while in control of the vehicle has been 125 MPH in a Helicopter I was flying in England. I've been in jets but I wasn't flying them. On land the fastest I've been was around 150 MPH on a bullet train, and 144 MPH on an English Train. But again I wasn't driving.
I don't plan to go more than 115 MPH again so I think i'm safe with my Marauder the way it is, for now.
