My nephew eneded up with sand in the motor of his mothers VW bug. First one to guess how wins. Think very creatively.

or and oil change with that new 5w-gritty oil?
Forgot to put the air filter back in after blowing it out with compressed air?

Tried to port and polish the engine the quick way. ;)
Or he hit a frozen bag of sand that was in the road and ripped the oil pan but not before injecting sand into the engine and intake.

I tend to agree with Zack on the no air filter scenario; but if it's in the crankcase, it's because some azzhole put it there. It's happened before.

He decided to make the corroded aluminum engine nice and shiny with a sand blaster?

Perhaps a variant of direct sugar injection technology?

I think we have a winner with this answer. A few idiots posted this "port and polish" stuff on the Internet and a lot of people have tried it.

That was my first guess also. The internet is like a chainsaw. It's a wonderfull tool when used properly, but can be dangerous when some people have unsupervised access.

I'm gonna say that someone was doing some sandblasting in the driveway behind the car. Maybe they were refacing kitchen cabinets, or something to that effect. Anyways, the overspray blew right up the tailpipe and into the engine.

Think very creatively.
Someone used sand to soak up some spilled oil in the driveway or garage and put it back in an empty oil container and forgot to dispose of it. He just grabbed the bottle to add oil without checking the contents and dumped it into the car. Viola !!! Sand in the engine. :o

HE thought the oil cap was the trunk latch and was trying to build a sandbox in the trunk? OR he buried the whole car in the beach during the night, and then walked around with a metal detector and then some beautiful girl asked him what he was looking for, and then dug it back up to look special?

The big question is, How old is your nephew? If hes a little kid then Im going with him just dumping the sand into the gas tank. If hes older and considering that its too damn cold for him to be on the beach. Is it possible that he tried to put out a small fire by dumping a bucket of sand on the engine and then without cleaning it, he started it up which sucked the sand into the intake?
Maybe during a oil change in a attempt to clean up accidental spill on the floor, he filled the new oil filter with some sand to dump on top of the spill then he just tapped out what remaining sand that was left in the filter and installed it?
hot-rauder
01-30-2008, 03:26 PM
he droped the spark plugs on the ground and proceeded to install them without brushing them off?
how much sand are we talking here?
air filter was dirty so he took it out and thoughthe would get more air in the motor without the filteror box.... drove around without an air box?
i feel bad that we are all assuming this kid did something stupid/ calling him dumb but i cant help but come up with foolish situations.

He went to Home Depot to get two 50 lb. bags of sand. He opened the rear of the VW bug and threw them in the "trunk" and took off.

You sucked the life right out of this. O.K., he hit a frozen bag of sand that was in the road, ripped the oil pan but not before injecting sand into the pan and intake. Sand in the oil filter too. There, now you have time to go read another thread about Tallboy not being here.

Wow! And all along I was assuming it was an old style rear engine beetle. With hitting something solid enough to rip open the oil pan you would expect he'd have lost control of the poor thing. I guess you can be thankful he had the driving skill, or good fortune that no one was hurt. BTW, we'd guess the engine's toast, what's a new one cost these days?
