Some insensitive idiots like him will try anything for the publicity. Negative publicity in this day and age can make you rich from interviews, tv show appearences, media attention, Gossip Newspapers, even if you don't win a court case.
Society loves Negative and "The Bad" things in life, No one wants to here about Positive or "The Good" it's not exciting, no money there.

In England if you leave a ladder in your backyard (garden as they say) and a thief see's it, jumps the fence and climbs up to your open window and falls off and breaks his leg, said thief can sue you for leaving a ladder out.
This in not uncommon either. There was even a Rockford File about this.
