View Full Version : King Kong In The Trunk

Last year I emailed Magnidat about a problem with my trunk space. I needed something that would hit so hard that my head and back would feel like i was in a car crash! But I still wanted my trunk space at the same time. So he came up with a box with 4 tens (mtx thunder 5500) that would fit on the deck in the trunk. I didn't think it was possible, but here it is!!! (It sticks out 3 to 4 inches more than Magnidat design it too.)

So, I see you mounted the amps behind the box...

'Gold' screws look good. I'll post the build pictures Monday.

This box was built in FL and shipped to Philly. Fit perfect so many miles away.

I wanna hear it!!!!

Lemme know how it does.... 1250W should be plenty!!!

Who's next?!

 Wow, thats beautiful. Now I'm not one for the giant rigs I see on ricers all the time, but that is really tasteful along with maintaining the usability of the huge trunk. How much did that run, and any more details on the equipment / setup.
I'd definitely desire a similar set up if there's nothing to invasive (drilling holes, etc), though I've blown tires in the middle of no where before and would be resistant to give up my spare, can't limp home on a four speakers :o

Does it make all the sound come out the rear end of the trunk????????
Why that???..It must be an age thing--I am older and the younger must think it is cool--coming out the back.....donno.......but why?????????

At some point that space will be wished it was available.........oh well........

isn't the normal radio sound loud enough???...it is when I go by and have my windows down..............oh that must be it.......to be heard when you not even coming up at the light ------that sucks... that normally gets some smoke form the Red Line --Red Line don't go for that crap.....she is quick to smoke after that......thats enough......carry on....

That looks great! Oh...by the way, Bass is omni-directional so the sound will travel in every direction filling the cabin with rich bass. The more drivers(subwoofers) you addactually makes the bass louder with less distortion(within reason) because you reach greater volumes quicker and with less amplifier effort. Any install thats done right can be tuned for the listeners preferences. This sound system...with all its woofers...will outperform ANY factory system and you would never know of its headbanging potential unless you decided to stretch its legs.

I have two 10in JL subs in my car and at normal listening levels you would be instantly irritated at your factory system, even with your little pioneer "add-on speakers". More is not excess...some could also say that about the thousands we spend to go faster...at least I can listen to my stereo on my 1 hour+ commute every day...the WHOLE TIME...how bout my 300 horses...only once in a while. PEACE!

Eh, what you say. speak up i can't hear ya.

Seriouly, that's part of the reason my hearing is deminished now. That and other loud noises in my youth and around your age.

Keep it down, if you still want to be able to hear a normal conversation, when you get a bit more seasoned.

Get a donut spare as it fits in the well. No cutting or drilling. Box was made to fit around EVERYTHING! 1 exception was having to knock down the 'ring' that the spare tire hold down hooks onto.

J mounted his amps on the back. Made the box stick out a bit more than planned. I could have built for that, but he wasn't sure where the amps would go, so I built to full depth.

Tom, actually our trunks are pretty strong, soundwise. The sound is passed back to the rear of the seats next to the hinges and also through the factory sub opening.

That box is built to MTX spec less 20% for shared air on 4. It's SEALED and very heavily internally braced. The rubber hammer tap on all surface revealed a flat non-resonant sound. This one will be tight and due to 4lb dacron stuff will extend safely to below 20 hz with no subsonic filtering needed. It will be EXTREMELY accurate with all 4 woofers in parallel to 1 channel and no cancellation distortion whatsoever.

Most 'boomy' loose bass comes from boxes that are swelling under the internal pressure. With 6 internal braces, many small panels, and 13 ply furniture grade high-density plywood, this one will not resonate!!!

Completed before shipping. Note internal bracing, sealing and pre-wiring.

I have to agree. Just cuz we have superchargers and in excess of 500+ CHP doesn't mean we floor it everywhere we go. A big system built right will sound very good, rich and full musically, but when we punch it.....

I benefit from both. While my track time isn't what others with a similar setup can run, it's still fast.

We all represent our own aspects of the enjoyment of this car. I hope this huge and powerful install with no functional loss of trunk space opens new doors for we Marauderers similar to the way the first supercharger opened the doors to 10 second 1/4's!

Tech details:
3.2 net cu ft sealed, braced stuffed box with 4x MTX5510-04 wired in parallel to 1 ohm to an MTX Thunder TA81001 rated 1500WRMS @14.4VDC. Actual output should be around 1250WRMS when the car is running. That's a perfect match of just over 300WRMS per speaker rated 150-300WRMS. Sealed enclosure helps ensure no over-excursion. Amp has remote level control.
A second smaller 4ch amp and aftermarket separates are also installed along with a 5 farad cap.

When set up properly the system should be very loud (capable) and distortion free.

1-5510 with a 300W amp is capable of about 132db. We double twice for 4 woofers to get 6db gain and double power twice for another 6db gain. Without taking trunk volume vs excursion-area volume into account this yields an estimated 144db. I predict 146db or so at full output when taking trunk volume differences into account. It should easily play in the low 140's for extended time and without upper frequency distortion.

I took a brute force route:

http://jtlopez.dyndns.org/albums/album491/pics_from_the_week_054.sized.j pg

I hadn't built a subwoofer before, but I read a lot and used partsexpress.com to source my parts. This Dayton sub has really impressed me, I even ended up buying an amp pack so I could try it with my home system where it sounded very impressive. It is 3/4" birch plywood with 2x2" cleats through out, roughly 3.3 cubic feet. It hits really hard and low, I am running it with a crunch amp (says 1000 watts max, I assume 150 to 250 watts RMS). The whole setup cost me about 225 dollars to put together.

dayton quattro 15 inch- 90 dollars (partsexpress.com)
crunch amp- 75 dollars (fry's electronics)
box- 60 dollars (home depot/lowes)

I am not a bass freak, but I like tight, clean sound, adding this sub really helped compliment the system I had already installed. My latest upgrades include re routing the power and aux input to my seat and made all my cable runs for my stereo system and inverter look stock, you can see documentation here:

But how much did that cost? :)

magindat
02-05-2008, 05:45 AM
Not much. Made it myself.

The woofer was a gift from an old friend who makes them by hand and the amp is 22 years old. I had the EQX in storage. The cap was a leftover part and I bought a new Epicenter from my friend who owns a shop, so it was wholesale.

Reality: the build is worth about 1000$. The trunk area is plated off and sealed and the whole back is 3 layers dynamatted. A hole is cut through the wall and metal support and finished in carpet. The amp/processor tray and woofer tunnel are one piece. The speaker weighs 72 lbs and was worth about 1500 when new. Even back in the day, a Linear Power 5002 was close to a grand. Even now, a refurb from TIPS, Inc is over $1200. An EQX is about 300. Cap about 100, Epicenter Concert Series around 200. So figure what you see is about 4 grand.

If you listen to J. S.Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toccata_and_Fugue_in_D_minor%2 C_BWV_565) or Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyotr_Ilyich_Tchaikovsky)'s 1812 Overture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1812_Overture) , you need powerful low frequency response, especially if the 1812 Overture recording includes howitzers recorded digitally, & miked in the field:

from wikipedia:

..."The 1812 Overture is best known for its thunderous volley of cannon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannon) fire and ringing chimes, which evoke the fury of the battlefield and the Russian people's subsequent victory. (During the Battle of Borodino, the two sides fired an average estimated 15,000 rounds of cannon fire per hour, over the course of 15 hours.)"...

..."Logistics of safety and precision in placement of the shots require either well-drilled military crews using modern cannon, or else the use of sixteen pieces of muzzle-loading artillery, since any reloading schemes to attain the sixteen shots or even a semblance of them in the two minute time span involved makes safety and precision impossible with 1800s artillery. Time lag alone precludes implementation of cues for the shots for 1812-era field pieces."...

I'm still looking for one of those flat speakers that only give a single sound to a single seat. You can have two different sounds given to each seat and not here the other. Need multiple sources though.

Anyone know of something like this?

If you listen to J. Absolutely. I couldn't agree more. Well recorded classical style music will really give a system a work out. Yanni's 'Within Attraction' is a particularly tough track. It's mixture of digital and real instruments.

I once participated in building a truck called the '1812 Overture'. It had, you guessed it, 18 12's. 18 Amps to go with them. We put the CD changer on a tether so it could be placed on the ground next to the truck to avoid skipping.

King Kong lyrics
(feat. Chamillionaire)

[Chorus:]
King Kong, king, king, king, king kong, king
King Kong, king, king, king, king Kong
If you hear before you see me [3x]
I got king kong in the trunk
King kong, king, king, king, king Kong, King
King Kong, King, King, King, King Kong
If you hear before you see me
I got King, I got King Kong

[Verse 1:]
A yo this beat is bananas
A King Kong you can put 'em in the trunk of the McClaren
When we do it they fall off, fall off
When they look at my ride, you see the doors fall off
And the wheels look flat, trunk so heavy in the back
Got the speakers in the front, they be sitting on my lap
Got a bumper to the back, with the trunk weighing it down
Look they think it's a lowrider when they come from my town
That's a King Kong, in the trunk, that's the gorillas behind me
When I'm rolling through your hood anybody can find me
You can hear me from the next block
When I'm on the next block, when I'm headed to the next block
Got you jumping to the next block

[Chorus:]
King Kong, king, king, king, king kong, king
King Kong, king, king, king, king Kong
If you hear before you see me [3x]
I got king kong in the trunk
King kong, king, king, king, king Kong, King
King Kong, King, King, King, King Kong
If you hear before you see me
I got King, I got King Kong

[Verse 2:]
Lil' Momma got you stopping and dropping
When a man stop walking
So I told her she ain't talking about nothing, she just fronting
You can hear me from a block
And you already know what's up
With the women cause they feeling me how it rumble in the trunk

I got 50 speakers up in my trunk and I turned it up
And all the ladies loving how it be bumping
They can check it out, you can hear before you see me
I got beats up in the trunk
All the ladies want to chase me when they hear my system bump

Say Jibbs I'm about to head out to the Bruin
Holla at you about fedy, hit my celly soon as you ready
Count this cheese like a deli
They thought I was a lunatic when I pulled up to the telly
I had that candy coated chevy, showing it's grill like it's nelly
And the ladies love me why is that,
They love the way I be getting my lean on
Flip the diamond, and get a multi colored diamond bling on
That King Kong, yea I bet ya this gon' be the theme song
Cause that King Kong will have your ears ringing like a ring tone

[Chorus:]
King Kong, king, king, king, king kong, king
King Kong, king, king, king, king Kong
If you hear before you see me [3x]
I got king kong in the trunk
King kong, king, king, king, king Kong, King
King Kong, King, King, King, King Kong
If you hear before you see me
I got King, I got King Kong

[Verse 3:]
yea, yea, yea, yeah
Them boys is knockin', I got it on lock
Cause I make hits like I'm boxing
Start it up and it sound like a block hit it
Then a hater, hating inside, like don't pop with this
See the beats will beat, ya hear me before you see me
Before you even can reach me, it'll have ya thinking
That this boy is a beast in the streets
While ya blinking, have ya bopper looking like you been drinking
I'll eat ya, it's like I have speakers in my speakers
So when they speaking on it all they gon' speak of is a beaster boy
So don't make me just treat ya to a feast

A beast'll just beat off both of your ear drums

[Chorus:]
King Kong, king, king, king, king kong, king
King Kong, king, king, king, king Kong
If you hear before you see me [3x]
I got king kong in the trunk
King kong, king, king, king, king Kong, King
King Kong, King, King, King, King Kong
If you hear before you see me
I got King, I got King Kong

We can discuss price on PM.

Shipping the King Kong box was stupid expensive. As a result, I did some serious research on pricing and shipping methods and have found ways to cut the shipping in half or less.

The bottom line, though, is if you CAN'T EVEN GET IT DONE, then the cost of shipping becomes irrelevant and worth it.

The King Kong was supposed to be "IMPOSSIBLE", but there you see it.
