ok, i cannot hold my tounge anymore, and keep in mind this is my opinion.

Why do people spend the time and money to change their oil every 3 months. this is rediculous, how long do you think oil has been setting in a semi going to your local store, how long till it is actually bought?

I feel that changing your oil on a time schedule makes no sense, my brother works at a local advance auto, ive talked it over with him before too and he agrees.

Oil has detergants that can only be used up when in your engine, cleaning the buildup inside your motor and keeping the seals lubed.

how does that happen when its in a bottle for 3 months, or in an engine that doesnt go anywhere in 3 months?

It doesnt make sense

How long do you propose, should the oil be left in the motor?

Better question: At what interval do you change your oil?

Didn't you know that oil has a born on date like Budwizer. LOL J/K.

I change the oil in my Mercury cougar every three months, because the odometer doen't work, but the MM get's changed every 3,000 miles because I get there way before three months. But then a 03 MM with 1200 mi. on it would be an issue with me, not every having it's oil changed.

well, that post about the 03 with 1,500 miles, i would probably change the oil just for piece of mind, but it will probably come out with some golden color in it still. (unless its break in oil)

Your oil has a lot more life in it than only 2 -2.5K miles.

Talk about waste of $$$$$

i change at my interval cause i want to keep the seals lubed (like the rear main seal) there might be more life in it, but what about changing in 3 month with only 500 miles on it, that is the waste of money

A member here opened an engine up that had a 5K oil chg schedule, the difference between it and a 3K oil chg sched eng was dramatic.

I think the Ford oil was being used, but I am not sure.

Does not alter oil and engine failure

Is the need to recruit new

If you are concerned about your oil and how long between changes, have an oil analysis done. I use Blackstone Labs (http://www.blackstone-labs.com). The collection kit is free, lab work is $22.50 per sample. Blackstone says I can go to 6,000 miles before changing oil & filter (I use Mobile 1 5w20 in the winter, 5w30 in the summer and Motorcraft filters). I still change both at 5,000 miles cause it's easier to remember, but it's nice to know I can keep it in there longer if need be.

When oil is sitting in its container, be it on the semi-truck or on the store shelf, it is sealed in an air tight container or, at the very least, still not exposed to the elements like oil that has been put into an engine.

Once moister mixes with the oil, it diminishes some of its properties. How much fast it occurs depends on the climate but I still feel that if a car is hardly every driven that it is wise to change the oil as least twice per year and run the motor until it reaches normal operating temp. monthly.

I Use Royal Purple XLR Racing Motor oil with a K & N Oil Filter. I change it every 2500 miles which is about 5-6 months on my car.

5,000 miles or twice per year. Shorter/more often if you're running your engine on the edge.

I change my oil religiously every 3 months as winter kills oil real quick... moisture & gasoline builds up very quickly in an engine when it's faced with -20 to -40 F.

I change it before it turns black!
The condition of the engine and
how much abuse it recieves dictates
when the oil gets changed..

Rethink what you are saying. You are saying oil sitting in an oil container is the same as oil sitting in an engine?

In an engine it is subject to fuel, water, coolant, sludge, carbon, oxydation and various solid contaminants.

Time in an engine does affect oil thats why every mfg schedule I have ever seen is time or mileage, whichever occurs first.

Yeah, what's up with that. The oil has been in the ground for thousands and thousands of years. It's basically good forever.

Most folks here agree that an oil change schedule of between 3,000 to 5,000 miles is about right. I have mine done at about 3,000 miles. That just happens to work out to about every 3 months since I put 12,000 miles per year on the MM. This is about the typical annual mileage for many people. Some folks do much more --- others do less.

I see changing the oil regularly as a means of prolonging the life of the engine and the car. When it is done regularly, the car runs better and idles more smoothly.

I frequently ride in taxi cabs with 300,000 miles or more on the original engine and they ALL tell me that they change their oil about once per week. That's has gotta tell you something about oil changes and engine life.

Do what you want --- on your own schedule -- but I see it neither as a waste of time or money. :P

I change mine every 5K miles (Mobil I) or about every 6 weeks.....167K miles with NO OIL CONSUMPTION!!!:bows:

You can never change fluids too frequently......within economic reason!!!:shake:

$25.00 every 6 weeks or so ain't going to break anyone and perhaps your car(s) will be happier and last longer!!!

wow.... oil war!!

well as i previously said, it was my opinion. I agree with the guy who said change when it starts turning black... my oil stays in the MM from late fall to early spring, more than 4 months, i dont change unless it get my odometer close to the changing miles.

Severe service, as explained in your owners manual, has Ford's miles/frequency recommendation for most MM's driven in cold weather, or other defined conditions.

2X per year with Royal Purple. The oil usually has 250-300 miles on it. I drain it into a clean container and use it in something else I'm driving (CV, Explorer etc) and run it for around 5-6K miles, since the oil does nothing in the MM.

Black_Noise

so y is it not good enough to stay in the mm? -------^
but then it is for something else?

A OEM reman longblock is around $7K, plus 14+ hours labor.
I got a full synthetic Pennzoil oil change package from Autozone , for twenty bucks.
Does this put it into perspective?
I go 2-3K between changes unless racing is involved.

There’s only one reason some of you folks want to change oil every 2-3k miles, you either idle at stop lights for hundreds of hours or you just want something to do. If you want to talk intelligently about how good or bad your oil changes are, get your oil analyzed and come to the party with some data. You might be surprised.

The insurance argument, that you change it every 3k or 3 months because you know taxi cabs that change weekly have 300k miles doesn’t make any sense. Taxis and other fleet vehicles do idle for hundreds of hours per month, which doesn’t show up on the odometer. I have a crown vic with 218k miles that still has good compression readings that had dino oil changed every 5k to 9k miles depending on how busy I was on the weekends. I have a Mercedes diesel with 311k that runs dino oil 5k or more between changes. I also have a truck that runs Mobil 1 that I can’t get more than 4k miles without too much iron, lead, and aluminum in the oil.

On my last blackstone report I ran 4900 miles with Mobil 1 0W20 and was below the averages except for Molybdenum. I'm going to run 6k miles on the next change and see how it looks. I do however, change oil once per year whether it needs it or not because I store the car over the winter.

So why do you throw out good oil, or do you just want something to do to your car?

Marauder Ford Reman 3W3Z6006ABRM $4,211.52 w/ a core.

25%-40% off is possible.

All that is needed for the core is all the parts. Ventilate the block just p/u the parts.

I'm on the Mobil 1 6-7k mile schedule. No need to flush good oil down the drain. I do 99% highway and have low mileage. No racing, very little WOT usage, no power adders. I thought that my 30k miles was on the high side for this car a year ago (well actually I guess it was 23k a year ago), but it looks like it's becoming on the low side... Come on guys keep driving a ton of miles! My car thanks you

Cheers

I had a 91 Dakota 3.9L, I never changed the oil, just the filter, and add oil, it was still running like a clock at 250,000 miles when i sold it. And no I'll never do that to my MM. I was paid to do it by a Co. developing a scavenger system to pull impurities, and metal particles out of the oil. In the end he collected the filters, and the scavenger to dismantle, inspect, & attempt to copy write, (patent).Never seen the system since.

He never changed or fixed anything on the car. Funny, he managed a dozen gas stations.
