I'll disagree with the unnecessary when it comes to firearms. In todays crime ridden, terrorist threatened world it is a unfortunate necessity.

I do a agree with the fun part. Not for everybody, but either is bowling, tittily winks, drag racing, ect...

I took my Dad to the gun range. We rented a S&W 44 Mag.

I spotted the first shots for him.

The second load his grouping was tighter than mine.

I said lets get some more targets and ammo. HE said no, too much.

Of course he did not want me to have a chance to beat him.

He hadn't fired a gun in over 35 years, he did remind me he ranked expert in the military.;)

Can't think of any Toy guns I have ever Fired.

I have fired a number of weapons though.

The most toy like would be a baby browning. .25 cal.

Least toy like a 60mm Motar, but it was the most fun.

Favourite was an AK74. Smokey but nice. Full auto.

Least Favourite is the HK G3 Also full auto, although a bren gun is also not fun to fire.

The Mac 10 is the most pointless gun I have fired. spray everything hit nothing.

My Dad used to fire 76mm tank guns he said those where lots of fun.

I just joined a local Sportsman's Club so I can get back into it......

Ray is correct, the Remington 870 is the one. Very durable, easy to keep clean. I have been hunting with mine, iron sights, for years now. Good to 75 + yards... If you fire it in the house two things are sure to happen. 1) You'll be deaf for a day, 2) there will be a big hole in your walls. 12 gauge are VERY powerful guns. Be careful. A slug will go through multiple walls. 00 Shot will make a mess of everything,

Took my fist deer with my red dot scoped Ruger .44 Mag, Super Red Hawk. A lovely piece. Deer was running at 80 yards. One shot, both lungs and heart, then knoked him over when the bullet hit the inside of the shoulder blade. One kick, all done.

Have my Colt .45, S&W 629, Ruger .22, S&W .38 and .357 Mag. and a few more I can' t remember.

I need to go shooting....

I used to hunt with my ex-husband. shotgun, blackpowder, and bow. When we split up I got a job in a factory so I could pay bills, that took a toll on my body.
I now love to go and shoot my handguns. A friend has his own gun range, and we have a local public one 10 miles from my house. When I go, lots of them are drooling when I pull out my newest baby. A Kimber pro tactical 2.

Joe is right about the ammo and making a mess. You do have to think about collateral damage and where the slug or 00 pellets will end up. You'll be in a world of hurt if you croak someone in the next house or apartment. There are a number of defensive loads being produced specifically for personal defense. At close range, 0-3 meters, bird shot is going to incapacitate a attacker. Although I have a Mossberg 590 Military ready to go, I rely on the handgun of the day. This time of year one of my Dan Wesson 45acps.

Please learn what the laws are in your state regarding use of deadly physical force. NYS is still a "King of the Castle" state. You are not required to retreat in your own residence. However, many states are not and even though gun ownership laws are much more relaxed, firearms usage laws are more restrictive. You can be absolutely positive that no matter how right you are in a shooting, that two things are going to happen. 1) you are going before the grand jury, 2) you WILL be sued civily.

As for self defense with shotguns, assuming five shots, you can load one slug, then two #00, then two #4 shot shells. This way you will fire the adequate, but less penetrating shots first. If they don't do the task, more powerful shots will follow. One very popular mod to a self defense shotgun (http://www.borelliconsulting.com/evals/guns/images/rem8701.jpg)is a storage rack attached to the gun. People will load softer ammo in the weapon & have the #00 & slugs at the ready in the rack.
