The production version of the Dodge Challenger SRT-8 was revealed today in Chicago. There are a couple of surprises: Firstly, the MSRP is $37,320 before the gas-guzzler tax, bringing your pre-tax MSRP to just over 40K. (I figured the SRT would be closer to 45K, and the lesser models (in the future) will be in the mid and low 30K's.
And secondly -- They decided to skip the current Dodge "cross-hair" grill and went with a design that pays homage to the first Challengers.
Besides my link above, if you go to Google News, then Google "Dodge Challenger," you'll find all kinds of press today.
I will be shopping this car as soon as supply catches up because it is a safe bet that they will sell at or above MSRP for at least awhile. Secondly, I may wait for the mid-engined model which will mostly likely have the 5.7 liter engine. I think I may want one without the hood-stripes, as well.
Either way - It's pretty sharp!

I like it ... but not in the $40-45K range. At least not without a "test drive". :D
The pic below is the "Concept Challenger" from the January 2006 Washington Auto Show.

I really do like what this car looks like. I agree. Wait until supply catches up with demand. There will be a premium attached here.

It's because Dodge messed up so bad with the Charger model, they had to bring this bad boy back and really make a hit with it. I dig it. Kind of funny though, back when Muscle cars ruled, Charger's were the car to have, and today, it seems like the Challenger will be the one to have.

I'm not sure the boys at Dodge would agree that they "messed up." Sure -- The purists were *very* upset that it had two too many doors. However, the LX sedans have been sales and critical successes for Chrysler. It's a good thing they have the LX sedans, because their last handful of mid and small cars stink! (And I'm a Chrysler fan!)
Dr. Z. and the boys at Mercedes helped bring the LX to life, but have left Chrysler with a real product void. The LX cars are getting long-in-the tooth without even a minor sheet-metal refreshing.

Whisky Tango Foxtrot??!!! No manual transmission???
They won't be getting my 40K.
(Ok, there wasn't much chance that they would have even if they had a proper transmission.)
PS I test drove a car with that "auto stick" crap. I'd like to tell them just where they can auto stick it.

There's the "mess up!" No stick. (Alert: Wishful thinking ahead.) Perhaps non SRT models will have a manual.

Most Challengers I remember were autos, but I was a Charger guy.
I saw a Super Bee, list over $45K.

If they ACTUALLY stick with that design, it = sex!
As long as it has the balls to back it up, and the don't price it out of the demographic price range.... it WILL sell!

Let me clarify here -- the link I posted IS the production version and the factory price for the first versions. (SRT-8). Secondly, the picture posted by Bluerauder is the Show-Car version and not the production version.

Leave it in "D" if you cant read the tach and shift before you hit the limiter.
They are talking about a 6 speed manual with the 6.4 525 HP for 09. MSRP for a fully loaded 08 is 42k, but they are asking 10-20k over for the preorders. MAYBE you could get one at the end of the model year but I doubt it. They are only making 4500 at this time

You can go to the dealer and order one starting today! They'll be hitting the strees in the next month or so.

I love the look but its really too damn expensive! They would sell like wild fire if they were in the 28 to 30K range... This car NEEDS a stick!!!!!!!!

The SRT-8 is the "premium" model -- The lesser models will cost significantly less. There will quite likely be a V-6 model starting in the very low 20's, and a mid-level 5.7 liter powered model in the upper 20's to low 30's. (ala Mustang)

Pretty soon, they'll be all over the roads like the 300C....and we'll still be grabbing all the attention in our rare and mysterious Marauders.....

Leave it in "D" if you cant read the tach and shift before you hit the limiter.
I KNOW how to drive, I know how to read a tach (and other gauges too, including oil pressure gauges that are REAL gauges) and I know how to shift before an RPM limiter. Heck I can even drive a car WITHOUT a limiter and not break anything! I can even manage to work a clutch and steer at the same time!
My point was, this auto stick crap is NOT a manual, it's a slushy-matic with a goofy-ass shifter.
I know automatics are better for drag racing, and I know they can be equal or better for gas mileage, but one buys a car like this for fun, not for practicality. To me, a manual is more fun.

No matter who made it or how much it costs, looks like a hot car, no matter how you slice it. A fine mix of old and new.
Glad to see them step up and take that chance. I am sure everyone who buys one will be pleased with their purchase.
To me, a manual is more fun.
Hear, hear.

Isn't Ford going to do a 427 Mustang? Not the old 427 CID, but 427 HP and badge it to compete.
*****, if Ford stock keeps falling, we can all pitch in and buy the company. What is it, $6 a share?
