Has anyone changed out their stock tank to the optional extended range tank that was offered on Town Cars? I think this is a 23 gallon tank. I'd like to have a longer cruising range and figure it should be possible given the similar chassis of the TC and Marauder.

Interesting question.
Hey, where are you located in SC? I'm up in Greenville, if you're close, maybe we can meet up sometime.

What year Town Car has this option? I looked at the 2007 order guide and it shows nothing in regards to a 23 gallon tank.

I would bet he is looking at the 1990's series Town cars. Same general style as our Marauders, and same trunk configuration too.....?

I know that before 1998 the TC, CV, and GM had a 20 gallon tank.

I'll have to dig out some brochures, but I think the extended range tank was offered on TC's during Marauder production. It figures that that option has been dropped, like so many things Detroit has done to decrease prodction costs. Apparently Town Car production was/is halted for a time while production moved to the St. Thomas plant where CVs and GMs are built. Too bad Ford hasn't seen the wisdom in either upgrading the Panther platform or developing a new RWD platform.

I was talking with someone several weeks ago and I told them I had a 19 gallon tank and they were like "that's all?!? Why not just an even 20? lol"

Ford was having EVAP system issues with raw gas getting into the charcoal canisters (~98), so they lowered the full height level in the tank. Same tank, just less space used for fluid. Basically they increased the length that the filler protrudes into the top of the tank. This gave more vapor space in the top of the tank, which stopped the liquid carryover to the canister.
If you find a fuel pump that will allow a slow fill, you can get another full gallon into the tank. Lift the fill spout as high as you can, with fuel still going in. Low fill volume is required to pull this off. Gravity of the extra height in the filler neck will assist in getting a little more in the top of the tank.
