HD DVD has given up.

The X-box is the main source of HD DVD players.

What is going to happen now for the X-box?

no one really has an X box for the HD player... they don't even come with it installed, it's not really a selling point for the system at all

No no, there's this attachable external HDDVD for the Xbox, and I never bought it either. My box spends its time letting me spin tires in Burnout Paradise at the moment, COD4 was last month:D

If you want a built in HD player buy a PS3. Well worth the money. Bluray is better anyway 1080p full HD.

Twisted Metal 2 is the best game ever and I don't think it's on Xbox. Maybe that's why. :P

If you want an HD player buy a PS3.

Fixed for you (my xbox can run 1080p btw) No idea if HD dvd does 1080p though seeing as I never have watched an HD movie. Also seeing as no games do 1080p native whether xbox or PS3 it seems to me that it's not really that much use... AND HD tvs that play 1080p cost more that it would cost me to reach 600whp... movies have been sucking lately anyway.

I am pretty sure the 360 Elite I got fo the kids is 1080i and plays DVD in 1080i as well. Looks pretty darn good on the little LCD TV I have it hooked up to.

I really don't know why we care so much? I see the outdoors in perfect color and clarity every time I go outside. Fabulous!

yup it plays 1080i and quite well, but hard core HD people are always harping on 1080p, personally I don't get it, and find that the HD dvds I have seen playing while sharp, have a strange color depth that seems un natural to me... maybe I just don't "get it"

HD only goes up to 1080i, BluRay goes to 1080p, however, to the untrained eye, you cannot tell the difference. My television does 1080i and 1080p, and my 360 has the HD attachment and I have PS3, looks great obviously, but when comparing to 1080p, you can't find the difference. Of course, my LCD tv is only 25", obviously if you have a bigger tv, it will make a difference. Now, on my Dad's TV (57" DLP) the PS3 wins over the 360.

Also, the "i" stands for interlaced, and the "p" stands for progressive.

Better yet PS3 support 1440P.

Uhh, I don't think any TV yet can do 1440p, and I don't believe PS3 does it. Where did you find that?

Microsoft will be releasing a Blu-Ray player for the XBox 360.

You really can't tell the difference between 1080i & 1080p on "consumer" level TVs (<45"). For that matter, lots of folks have even smaller TVs (<=30") where you'd be hard pressed to see the difference between 480p & 1080i.

Now on the biggun's, (65">) you can tell the difference. Even more so if you have a disk that is a good transfer. I moved up from a 65" Mits rear projection CRT 1080i (about 5 years old) to a Mits DLP 1080p and I can tell the difference even with up converted 480p DVDs.

Larger the screen, the larger the difference. The smaller the screen, the smaller the difference.

Nope, that's only if you store your Xbox in a poorly ventilated area. It's been proven. And if it's your only choice, get the Nyko intercooler.

If it happens you drive down to best buy and give it to them and they give you a brand new one with the upgraded HDMI port that's what I did

Didn't Bill get rid of a bunch of engineers over this? He also accrued $4 billion to cover any unit that fails over the next 4 years. (So I have heard)

yeah if you have a build date in the affected years Microsoft will take care of you almost no questions asked. The latest version with the HDMI in theory won't have this problem, I replaced 2 of the ones from the affected years, and now I have the HDMI version and it has been good to go.

You can store a PS3 ANYWHERE and there is no need to buy a intercooler. Microsoft should have got it right the FIRST time.

It's really not a problem since MS is standing behind it and has extended the warranty for all boxes that fail that way... all you have to do is send it or take it in... took me a total of 20 minutes, walked into best buy said "hey I have the red light error" they plugged it in, then said "ok go get one from the shelf" then I was on my way.

Yeah, I got the kids and Elite for X-Mas. They like it a lot more than they like me......

My Son said, "why did you get the Elite, it's $100 more?" I told him the white one doesn't match all the other components.......

Yeah, I'm getting pissed though, I have wanted to supercharge for about a year now. Wife says we can't 'afford' it. I figure if I can't spend it on toys for me, I'll spend it toys for the kids.

I reminded my lovely I have spent $38,000 on jewelry for her over the past 20 years. Uh, that didn't go over so well. (At least I would use and enjoy my supercharger every day)

Yeah, Call of Duty 4 is very addicting on line; countless hours frequently approaching 1-2AM. The HD-DVD player wasnt in the equation when purchasing the Xbox360 . I did go for the Platinum edition though.

It's official - HD DVD is dead. Toshiba has announced they're pulling out, so it's a done deal.

The Xbox360 is not tied to HD DVD, although the add on drive was the #1 selling HD DVD drive. Microsoft had little skin in the game, other than the codecs and code used in the implementation of HD DVD, and the VC1 codec can also be used by Blu-Ray. The 360 is turning a profit (has for the last few quarters), so I don't think this impacts the console, one bit. It may drive additional PS3 sales, now that a format "winner" has been chosen...

Just to clarify, HD DVD is not "only" 1080i. Some older (first generation Toshiba) players were, but the movies are 1080P, just like Blu-Ray. The quality of a movie can only be assessed on a movie-by-movie basis, as it's very much dependant on the codec used (determining physical space requirements), the master (the quality of the original source) and the encode (the attention to detail paid by those involved in transferring the film onto disc). I have never seen a High Def. movie that wasn't a substancial upgrade from the equivalent DVD, outside of the original 5th Element on Blu-Ray (Sony re-released it, because it was that bad).

Xbox360 CAN upscale DVDs to 1080P, but not via componant (three RCA cables), due to DVD licensing requirements. If your TV accepts 1080P via SVGA (computer monitor-type connection), then you're golden... This is how my 360 is connected. Movies can and do look spectacular, on my 46" LCD...

PS - I have both 360 (with HD DVD add on) and PS3. HD DVD was/is the more complete offering to the viewer, however Blu-Ray has a greater upside, and more money backing it. I stopped buying HD DVDs when the Warner Bros. announced the were going Blu-Ray exclusive (thanks to a rumored $500mil. pay off). I have about 70HD movies, and counting...

You can buy a Toshiba HD DVD player for $86 now and get 5 free HD movies after rebate.

This may be a good deal for someone if you need a better standard DVD player as HD DVD players will play back standard DVD's and upconvert them.

For $86 you probably get a better standard DVD upconvert plus you can nab some clearance HD DVD's while you're at it. Yes you can buy an upconvert standard DVD player, but they are not too far off from $86 for a high quality one, and I'm going to assume this may be even better quality in the upconvert PLUS lets you play HDDVD while you're at it.

Really a good deal if you're in the right situation.

get ready to pay out the butt for proprietary DVD/ hardware. sony owns the patent to blueray and will charge a nice Sony price to use/license blueray.

console phhss.. get out of the kiddie console and start playing them the way they were ment to be played, on a computer. :P

Make sure its the XL intercooler with the metal over the electric connector. The older intercooler would melt itself to the Xbox and would void the warranty. If you store the Xbox in a poor ventilated area it would get so hot that the solder that holds the processer chip to the motherboard would weaken and the chip would fall off causing the red ring of death.
