Driving a Panther didn't help this poor guy!

This is a picture of an accident that happened just down the road from my place Wednesday. The 59 yr old driver was killed instantly when his Grand Marquis hit and sheered off one hydro pole then wrapped itself around another. Hard to believe that a full frame car like ours can bend like that. They aren't sure how fast or the cause etc. as they are still investigating. It was lucky that this happened when it did because it was across the street from a grade school and within 1 hour the place would have been crawling with kids.

I didnt know at first it was a GM until a co-worker who was in the area right after it happened snapped a few more photos. If I figure out how to post them I will.

Panther chassis is quite strong, but there are limits for everything.
What could be the speed on impact ? Probably much over the limits...

Yea, that sucks he got killed. But seriously, he must have been moving, I mean, it looks like he flipped it up into the pole then it bent. The last pic you posted, showing just the bottom of the trunk, if you only posted that, I'm sure we all would have figured it was a Panther eventually.

That car is actually more intact than my brothers 1970 LTD was when he did the same thing 29+ years ago.

Thank GOD that there wasn't any pedestrians at that moment. I feel sad for the man's family and friends. To lose someone suddenly is very shocking.
My parents died in a similar accident, high speed & poles at the road edge. My parents est. speed was about 95mph.

There is a stretch of road in my town where several have died hitting the poles. In light of my parents death, my grandfather who was a city civil engineer agonized over the city's decision not to move them away from road edge due to costs. Poles & trees are usually lethal when hit.

Three points of interest concerning the damage seen in the last photo; impact on roof of car, its weakest area, impact was on a focused point (the pole), even a roll bar could not withstand this type impact.

In the fourth picture you can see the frame split near where it is welded, just in front of the rear wheel well. That is a lot of force.

Wow, just read your initial post again and noticed the he had hit TWO poles!
As Ray mentioned, it is still intact considering the impact. My parents car was a Ford Torino GT, impact on side, car was split open. Indeed theses frames and cars are tough, but not infallible.

That's a 10-12" pole and it is snapped. Not an easy feat at all. The top part of the pole is probably being held in place by wires and cables at the top. Note that the driveshaft is also bent around the pole ...... yes .... he was moving rather fast.

The pole has has the advantage of being held firmly in the ground & being a solid object. The car, is of course, hollow like a can. This is why it is so important to be safe out there!

Plenty of small imports have done that in the Balt/DC area over the years....but;
I've never seen a full size/body on frame vehicle get pretzel'd like that.
Broken frame, bent driveshaft, roof crushed down to the floorpans...He was hauling a$$ when he left the road.

He might still be inside the car?? :dunno: Unless he was ejected upon impact, I don't see any evidence of any opening large enough to remove a person nor "jaws of life" cuts.

The way it hit, I don't think there'd be much to remove after they did get it cut open. Real bad, agree with other posts, this guy had to be really moving.:(
