World-renowned tuner and hot rod king Boyd Coddington died at 6:20 am this morning. The cause of death is still unknown. Coddington, founder of Boyds Wheels and designer of prize-winning custom cars, had recently been hospitalized twice for an undisclosed medical condition. Although he was though to be in recovery, rumors of his untimely death began circulating today throughout the forums. A spokesperson for Boyd Coddington's corporation has confirmed to Jalopnik that those rumors are true. The company will be releasing a statement later today.

Shocking... I hated his show but he built beautiful vehicles... didn't seem like he ran his business very well seeing as how everyone was quitting on him or he was firing someone... but he seemed like a nice man and his vehicles will keep his memory living

I remember that first car, I think I have a toy of it somewhere. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but those cars aren't hot rods those are trailer queens. Sometimes in these Rockabilly Hot Rod magizines you see adds that say pre 65, no Coddingtons, no trail queens no billet machines.... The man had great talent no question, but I have yet to see a "Hot Rod" from his designs.

Whether or not his cars became trailer queens by their owners doesn't matter. His cars had a reputation of being very driveable. They could be used as comfortable everyday drivers, or cross country cruisers. They were not designed to be strictly trailer queens.

His cars are indeed Hot Rods, they are just to an extreme. The opposite extreme being the Rat Rods.

My definition of a Hot Rod is going fast and not caring about looks. Usually built out of used parts, home grown and on a low budget. His cars were far from low budget and it looks doubtful that any car ever broke into the 11s, saw rain or over 30,000 miles.

We all have opinions. The designs stand out though I must say!

Honestly - the man was on par with Barris and Foose. He was one of the foremost car designers and customizers on the planet. Names stick out and Boyd Coddington was a trademark name. Personally - I was NOT impressed with his show but the man runs business the way he saw fit. It is an incredible loss to the car world. Who the hell saw this coming???

Custom cars are exactly the way I see his work. Pretty cool stuff and no I didn't see this coming simply because I never really followed the guy. I saw the show once or twice a few years ago, but I really watched it for the designs and stuff.... I wasn't all for the drama.

Boyd's cars were works of art, but WAY too expensive for any but the wealthy. I can't see any of them being daily drivers, or even weekend warriors, as the insurance on them must be outrageous due to their value and the fact that just about everything on them is hand-made and would be difficult and/or expensive to replace or repair.

Having said that, I liked his show and he will be missed.

Rat Rods do not always have the "go." Hot Rods are built to go and looks are secondary. Which is the opposite of a Rat Rod, it's all about looks.
