This is a photo of the Hyatt next to the SuperDome from my office on the 19th floor of the AMOCO building.
The white panels are covers for the broken glass. Our building only had a few broken glass panels although we were exposed to debris.
This side of the Hyatt was protected on all sides.
Anyone care to guess why the glass broke?

OK I'll bite..
what side of the bldg is damaged?
Is there construction in the area?
Are the top 5 floors open?
Is the photo recent?
Did the glass fall in or out?
How old is the bldg?

Is that busted glass on the concrete infront of the building or birds?

The broken windows broke the broken windows!!! Accelerated wind speed in the 'protected' area hurled debris into a few windows, those windows broke and that glass broke other windows, and it became a domino effect. COOL!!

Someone imploded another building close to it. Perhaps extra pyrotechnics were used during the implosion due to the implosion being filmed for a movie. The implosion explosions plus movie pyrotechnics blew out a lot of the windows.

Even then that glass is probably 1" thick
I woulda guess Katrina too but figured it was a recent pic...

We have several winners. It was taken after Katrina.
I was due to the shape of the building, same problem as the John Hancock in Boston. It is an inverted wing.

Vultures have been eating the sealant surrounding the windows and the windows fell out.

So pressure variance caused the glass to pop out

Thats my analysis based on what I saw.
What interesting is how little damage the AMOCo building had. It had pop out pressure panels.
All the roof top mechanical were swept away. The glass was tempered and very little of it shattered. They were really concerned about small glass parts hitting pedestrians and that is what delayed the reopening.
I don't think the building owner knows what tempered glass is.
6 weeks after Katrina it was in better shape than before.

+1 ^^^ We've done that in downtown Vancouver a few times, but I won't mention the time the "controlled" house fire spfx shot got out of control and became a 3 alarm fire.....:o
