The Top 10 Collector Cars of the Future

Collecting cars is an expensive hobby. Here's a twist: Buy a new car today that will be worth a fortune as a collectible years from now. Best of all, you don't need to break the bank to buy a hot and value-appreciating ride. But you do have to be patient, since waiting is key.

"Many consumers could be driving a future collector car right now," McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty, a specialty insurer of collector cars in the United States, and himself a respected collector car valuation expert. "Our goal was to find cars that are currently on the road but may be considered nostalgic in 15 to 20 years. Each car on Hagerty's Hot List possesses a 'buzz,' a wow factor that resonates with consumers of all ages, many cars being daily drivers that turn heads already." Why do some vehicles become tomorrow's collector car? Hagerty says it's a combination of pop culture popularity, limited production numbers and the style of the next generation of collectors.

Hagerty's Hot List, the top 10 collector cars of the future:

1. Cadillac XLR-V Roadster
Under the hood sits a hand-built 4.4-liter V8 that's been supercharged and puts out 443 horsepower. This is a serious domestic roadster that competes with the Mercedes SL-Class, Porsche 911 Cabriolet and Jaguar XKR, as well as the four-seat BMW M6 convertible.

2. Lotus Exige S
Most practical people will find the Lotus Exige is a miserable little car--that is if you are shopping for a grocery getter! Research uncovered one anonymous review stating "Bottom Line...my heart beats faster when I think about this car...it is that rewarding."

3. Audi S5
A slick coupe with solid credentials. It provides good looks, impressive all-wheel-drive handling and an affordable price tag for this segment.

4. Mustang Shelby GT 500 KR
The new GT500 KR (King of the Road) takes the bare bones of a GT500 and turns it into a 540 horsepower muscle car that pays tribute to the legendary Carroll Shelby. Production is expected to be around 1,000.

5. Chevrolet Corvette Z06
The ferocious Z06 is a fixed-roof coupe with a 7.0-liter V8 that produces 505 horsepower. The last 50 years have proven that most Corvettes eventually become collectible.

6. Smart
At first look, the Smart seems too small to be practical. It's not. Rather, it is a marvel of packaging efficiency. This is the first year they will be available en masse in the United States.

7. Subaru Impreza WRX STi
Some Subaru enthusiasts may not like the idea of being spotted in a hatchback, but this will make it more collectible down the road.

8. Honda S2000 CR
Less than 2,000 of the CR editions will be built. This is a high-performance version of the stock S2000 that is regarded as Honda's only true sports car.

9. Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky
This pair of roadsters from GM have all the necessary ingredients: rear-wheel drive, a powerful engine, independent suspension and an impressive weight balance.

10. Dodge Charger Super Bee
It has a 6.1 liter HEMI V8 with 425 horsepower and 420 ft.-lbs. of torque. Need we say more for a family sedan?

I disagree with the list on missing a couple of potentials. One: Obviously the Marauder is missing. Nuff said. Next, the GTO. although not a retro like the Stang, it does have many good qualities that will make it desirable in 15 years. I do not think the new Challenger or Camaro will be as hot in 15 years as expected by the car magazines because the car companies are going to "beat the dead horse" out of them to gain max profits. Just look around at all of the Stangs and Chargers on the road and you understand. The only Mustangs that will be wanted will be early production models of the new style, Bullet models and those modded at the factory by Shelby and Rousch etc... Just my opinion. What do you all think.

^^^^^^^^^^^I'll agree, and add a few points^^^^^^^^^^, These cars are all high dollar cars, IMO, and would not be daily drivers, he has listed some that will only be 1000 in prod. no. the smart shouldn't ever hit a collector list, just because.

the list seems to be intended for buying new and sitting on them so the Marauder would be not listed...and since I drive the dickens out of my MM I doubt a 300k miles car is gonna be a collectors item for anyone but me.

oh...and dayum- I am really relieved that the Excursion wasnt on the list :D

That was my first though too when reading the article.

I was also surprised the Bullitt mustangs were not listed. 2001 and 2008.

The Excursion will only be a collector's item after it is 50 years old if there are any left in pretty decent shape.

And by then fuel will be about $25.00 a gallon. :)

That is the stupidest car "collection" I've ever seen. Talk about pathetic. How the hell did the Saturn Sky make it on there? STi? Since when do foreign cars become collectibles? Don't even start me on the Charger.

The Smart? An econobox should never be on a collectors list. That one car ruins the credibility of the entire article.

Some prospective from one who's been there. I'll hold up the 90 - 93 Mustang Feature Cars as an example. Although investment wasn't our goal, we ordered took delivery and stored a '93 Canary Yellow Mustang Feature car. There were just under 1,100 produced and ours has been recognized by several publications as being one of the best in the country, as well as MCA judged concours 1st Gold awards. You guys who visited Carlisle, last year, saw Sunshine displayed in the Invitational in Building "T". Also there are photos in the member's gallery, if anyone's interested.

So, the car is now 15 years old and perfect in every way with every bit of documentation and paperwork you can imagine, even including the computer printouts as to the scheduling and build, from the factory, as well as photographic documentation of every paint daub and chalk mark on the car, as delivered. It was taken from the delivery truck, directly to the lift where the photos were taken. As far as a "collector car" I don't see what more could have done to preserve and enhance it's value, and collectability.

Right now, it's value has climbed to the point where we could just about recover the original purchase price........... So much for investing in cars.

And yes, I'll agree, that list is a total crock

PS: please dont think I'm complaining, as stated before, our goal was not investment, it was done to preserve what we considered the best, and last, Fox Ford produced.

What I don't get, why the Black Wood failed, but the Mark LT's are selling, basically same thing. I heard the Black Wood has a rug in the bed. :poke:

It should have been a Navigator with removeable roof, over the back. Gm did that didn't they?
