Drove by it today and stopped to see it. Great condition, all original. Pretty good price too. If it hit Barret Jackson I'm sure it would be more.

If that is a real GTX with those options and not a clone that is a good price in todays market. I don't know anyone with a mopar VIN decoder anymore.
Those cars were a real kick in the ass. A friend I haven't seen in years had a '70 440 six pack 4spd Road Runner, and when he nailed it and opened up the outboard carbs it felt like you were shot out of a canon. :burnout::burnout:

rofl Larry, thanks for the clarification. I talked with a salesman, slipped my mind that it was the tranny and not HP, however he said the owner told them it was putting down some impressive power.

The knucklehead who wrote up the ad, did mistakenly list the engine at 727 horsepower. But when you read further, you see the 727 automatic mentioned. Then it goes on to say that the engine was originally a 440 4bbl. Then upgraded to the Six-Pack set up, and is now rated at 390 horsepower.
It is still a nice looking car. But it would need further scrutiny before paying that price.

I owned a '70 GTX back in the late 70's. The color was plum crazy. It had the 440 ci engine with 375 hp. It was a huge car that would haul butt and suck up the gas. Nice car!

Agreed, brakes, handling, fit and finish all leave something to be desired.

On the other hand, a multi-carb big block has some kick-azz torque; stomp on it and it will really throw you back in the seat. That's the one thing missing on the MM, IMO.

Well said. Don't forget the sounds it makes, and the one thing carbs are good for--quick reving and dropping right back to idle quickly.

That's right, and the basic blocks were different as well.

The 440 was based on the original "B" series block, the hemi was designated an "RB" block, which had a raised deck height to accomodate extra stroke.

A new Z06 vette can smoke anything ever made back in the day. And is much more enjoyable to drive. I do admit certain cars from that era are real pretty to look at and sound good!

But you cannot beat the sound of a Big Block V8 with a thumper cam that can barely idle as it 'WHUMPA WHUMPA WHUMPAs' through a set of open dual exhausts!

Chrysler made some modifications to the stock 426 block to make it stronger for the intended hemi use. 2 of the main differences were cross bolted main caps bolts, (2 out of the 4 on each cap), and a block tapped to accept the hemis heads unique bolt hole design. Thats why you can't bolt hemi heads on any stock RB engine. The 426 eventually became the 440 in 1967.

I didn't realize this, always thought the hemi block differed from the 440 block, i.e. different deck heights, lower ends, etc.

If you read the entire ad. It says 375hp but was converted to the 6 pak set rated @390 hp. So I assume he put in the transmission with is a 727 torqflite.
